Peter Maher said he walked up the stairs to the plane last night without a limp, without crutches and without a knee brace (clearly paraphrasing)

so likely a groin injury me thinks

Irving could only dress for a max of 20 games. The Heat already has two 'AHL veteran' goalies so why get Irving in, when he's already established that he can play at that level. It was more important to have Irving ready to compete for the back up job when the lockout ended. Now Irving has his chance to show that he can play in the NHL.
Holy reach Batman. Irving was simply outplayed by the other goalies, it is not the first time that has happened either. Saying that the Heat already knew Irving was a good goalie so they went with another guy is ridiculous.

Not quite accurate. I believe it is a max of 25 games, and that Irving could sign another one giving him another 25 games (I believe in the end, he was eligible to play up to 50 games). His lack of playing time was not due to a limitation of games he could play. He simply did not play well at all, and Taylor and Brust did.

I hope Irving has it together now. Makes you wonder what will happen if Irving does very well. Kipper signed for one more year, Ramo coming in next season... Somebody is getting moved.

Blessing in disguise. Kipper has been nothing short of terrible this year and management was refusing to do anything about it. Let's see what Irving has before writing him off. He surely can't do any worse, statistically speaking.

Hell, if Irving goes down, Butler may have to learn how to block a shot..... could be win win...
I'd throw away a game against the blue jackets to see Butler in net. That would be hilarious.

Well, the good news is I think we can survive with just average goaltending with Hartley's system. The team has been doing an excellent job limiting shots and scoring chances, and also potting enough goals that we don't need to win 1-0 or 2-1 anymore. This is also the last chance we have to really see what we have in Irving.

Wasn't there a situation last year with 2 goalies getting injured, and a player having to put on the pads in case the callup couldn't get there?

Let's sign Connor Crisp.

Then you would have some idea of what happened in St. Catharines, Ont., on Sunday after the Erie Otters' only available goalie, Ramis Sadikov, was injured after being run by a Niagara IceDogs opponent just two minutes into the game.

With their other goaltender, Devin Williams, sitting out with a head injury he suffered two days earlier, centre Connor Crisp was drafted to go in goal. Crisp, gamely jamming his wide double-E feet into Sadikov's narrow goalie skates ("my coach said if I wore player skates, I'd break my foot"), allowed 13 goals on 45 shots in a 13-4 loss to Niagara. IceDogs management was hardly amused, with owner Bill Burke calling it "brutal" that the last-place Otters did not dress a backup goalie.

But no one could fault Crisp for taking one for the team. His valiant effort led to him being named the game's first star and a trending topic on Twitter, with some joking that the goalie-deficient Toronto Maple Leafs should draft him.

I'm excited to see a young guy in net. I like Kipper, but it has to happen at some point.

Kipper had been bad up to the blackhawks game. If he had finished last nights game, that would have been 2 great starts for him on a row. Lets hope Irving can keep the flames alive and Kipper plays like the last 2 starts when he comes back.

You are right it is 25 games per try out contract. I searched on the Heat and Flames sites but couldn't find anything. I did just find this:
http://flamesnation.ca/2012/9/27/lel...t-on-a-try-out

What is the purpose of having him play with two capable goalies already on the team. If Irving gets injured then the Flames would get stuck with another year of Karlsson. I agree that Taylor and Brust (kind of unexpectedly) played really well to start and continue to play well. However, if Irving/the Flames really wanted him to get game experience they could have sent him to Europe or loaned him to another AHL team.

This situation has happened many time in sports, franchise/starter player goes down due to injury and the team / fanbase freak out. Backup surpasses expectations and goes on to lead the team for the rest of the year. Most recent examples are Colin Kaepernick & Alex Smith. But this also happened with Holtby when he got on his hot streak in the playoffs.

With Kiprusoff ageing and his save percentage sitting at .870 (even though i'll admit he was better last night), this by far isn't the worst thing that could happen to the team right now. Give a young guy a chance, he looked beyond excellent in training camp and looked pretty good last night as well.

That being said I hope Kiprusoff isn't out very long in case Irving doesn't pan out the way i expect him too. But I do believe that if Irving did play the next 6 games he would put up better numbers than Kipp has thus far.

Bottom line is I believe people are over reacting.. give the kid a chance.

I'm not worried about Irving. Yes he hasn't played much buyin the limited NHL action he's seen I think he's looked really good. He makes some great saves a lot of the time and (as many flames backups in the past) had been left out to dry a few times. I think Irving is a good goaltender.

I think people make too big a deal out of Irving's Heat experience this year. It's not like he's never been played well in the minors or never played well in the NHL. It was not a great situation to have 3 capable goalies and when two of those guys were specifically brought in cause of a prior relationship with the coach, well! I can't believe it made things any easier for Irving.

What matters is how he plays when it matters. He played like an NHL goalie last year so Im willing to se what he can do.

And some other poste brought this up too but Kipper was once the third man out in the Sharks goalie system And posted a horrendous 3.27 gas and .879 save percentage in 22 games the year before in SJ and look how he turned out.

With goalies, you never know what you have until they are playing regularly in the NHL.
