I am glad some found something to be angry about today. And what better than Steinberg’s comment that the Flames want to get a good return for Kadri to get angry about. It is natural to be offended that the Flames want to get a good return for their assets as a Flames fan.

I'm not angry. I am generally happy with what Steinberg said otherwise.

Unrealistic hypothetical.
Say the Flames could trade for Q. Hughes and knew he would re-sign full term (fair contracts for superstar dman).
So a decade of Hughes locked up. And we end up with a top 4 pick this season.
Cost is 1st (vgk) + Parehk + Gridin + Frost.
Do you do it?

Really? Why?
Hughes is a superstar ppg dman in a bad team. Arguably the 2nd best dman in the league.
This would give you the ability to build a core of hughes, top 4 pick (mckenna, stenberg, lawrence), coronato, Wolf, brz, reschny and whatever other prospects pop for the next 10 years.
You could also still recoup a 1st + prospect trading rasmus and have all your future picks.

I feel like he is better for a team looking to contend right away.
He doesn't fit our timeline. But obviously it would be amazing to have him on the team.

I guess I've been viewing our timeline as Wolf.
Wolfs 24 so i figure we have the next decade to seriously compete.
We're eating into it because we dont have the other pieces yet unfortunately, but if you added a top 4 talent this season and hughes that would change fast.

I think Parekh and Gridin will be major contributors for the team in 2-3 years, I think we get a top 3 this year anyway and whoever we get will be a couple years away from major contributor as well. I think we'll see several.more prospects graduate to the NHL in the next couple years, and we likely get a high pick next year. All those combined and I see the team trending up in 3 years at most which still aligns with Wolf's windows, but we fill out the rest of the roster.
I guess I like the direction of the team and giving up picks and two of our top prospects for a win-now player isn't the direction I would go.

Parekh kills the trade. He hasn't really had a chance to prove it yet in the NHL but I think there is a good chance he could play at Hughes' level. The optimist in me thinks Parekh's ceiling is higher but who knows if he will actually translate everything he did last year into future impact. Parekh's RD position is more valuable/rare than LD.
That doesn't even get into the fact that Parekh is 7 years younger.
Throwing in Gridin, Frost, and a 2026 1st on top of Parekh is a huge payment that takes a big bite out of the rebuild and yet does nothing to secure a franchise C. Since the draft, Parekh has been making people think that he was drafted too low at #9OA and Gridin looks like a steal at 28.
That kind of trade would need to return Celebrini, not Hughes. Specifically because of the positional need but also because Celebrini, Parekh, and Gridin are all from the same draft class.

We need to be looking to pick up high-end draft picks and young players in trades.

Seravalli says that the Canucks are looking for a young, top-end center in exchange for Hughes. Assuming an acquiring team knows they are getting Hughes for only 1.5 seasons before he signs in New Jersey, what teams in the league could meet that asking price and are also in their playoff contention window (either trying desperately to make the playoffs or to contend for a cup) during that time?
Detroit might be a fit. They are desperate to make the playoffs. They have Danielson as a highly-regarded young center. They have lots of good prospects and plenty of draft picks to trade. Could use an elite point producer.
New Jersey, if they want to pay to get him early, could offer up a package around Mercer + Nemec for him. But tough to do that knowing you are virtually guaranteed to get him for free in 1 year.
Have to say it’s tougher than I thought to find a fit for Hughes in a trade based on what Vancouver is demanding. You’re asking a team to give up the most highly-valued commodity (young, top-end center) in the league. Hughes is probably one of the top 2-3 defenceman in the league so he would definitely be worth it if the team is looking for that big step to contend this year and next year. But most teams that are in that window don’t have the young center prospect/NHLer that they can trade.
For example, Dallas may want Hughes but they can’t trade Johnston for him - and I don’t think Bourque is seen as a top-end young center.
Columbus could offer up players like Johnson and/or Sillinger for him… but they aren’t contending yet and already have a player that’s very similar to Hughes in Werenski.
Utah might want Hughes to finally make the playoffs in the next 1.5 seasons… but they don’t really look close to being a playoff team right now and it likely would cost them Tij Iginla to get that deal done. Would be awful to see an Iginla name on a Canucks hersey so I hope Utah is not that crazy.

I can’t see a trade where Hughes doesn’t end up with his brothers.
It’s been the narrative for what feels like years now.
As soon as NJD extended Luke it felt inevitable.

I thought so too, but someone here commented on the fact that if Quinn ends up in NJ, it could hurt Luke's career as they're both LHD and Quinn would be blocking Luke from eventually running PP1. Maybe they could make it work, but I thought it was a valid point by whoever posted that.

I wouldn’t sleep on Detroit. Family ties there as well.
I think it was Elliot but someone, recently, was questioning whether adding Quinn to the Devils lineup would have a limiting impact on Luke’s career. Then again, maybe the Hughes’ don’t see it that way.
Just a thought. I do agree it’s most likely all three end up on NJ.
Canucks need to decide if they’re going to give themselves the best chance they can to land the best pick/prospect they can in 26, or kick the can down the road to 27.
Really good piece this morning from Thomas Drance. Although not the same, there are some similarities between the Flames and Canucks as it relates to both ownerships view on rebuilds. Although were rivals at least the two fan bases may be able to tip their caps to one another as were both baffled by the decisions made at the top.

They’ve said they want to play together as D-partners, and the framework has already been discussed with Nemec, Mercer and picks going the other way.
Yea it might not happen, and I have no insider information on this, but I’d bet NJD at this point.

You don't see a hierarchy at all?
I mean take them all with a grain of salt for sure but I'd put what Steinberg is saying over say Dreger or Lebrun.

Incredibly silly thing to say without knowing the offers to date, or the offers in the future.
