I actually stopped reading the comic books because I started to find them less entertaining and more vessels for outrageous violence. I like the show more I think.

Much in the same way that I critique the Flames and am a fan, yes.
I'm not going 'oh i can't wait to see what happens on the farm', but I am saying 'i can't wait to see who dies next on the farm'

Jon Bernthal On Shane's Death: "I think it's not always about whether or not a character dies, but how they die. And besides, I always thought this was Rick Grimes' story. Shane dying needs to resonate with Rick and the rest of the Grimes family. That's the point."

So what volume (roughly) are they up to in the show? Amazon has the The Walking Dead Compendium Volume 1 (Vol. 1-8) on sale and I was thinking of picking it up. Thoughts from the comic lovers.

I bought it, it's on the truck for delivery as we speak.
I can turn to the last issue in the back and let you know when I get it.

It's a mixture between the end of volume 2 and the middle of volume 3.
Wait never mind, the compendium is different to the image comicbooks that you can get at Barnes and Nobel, Chapters, etc.,

Just got the Compendium, just flipped to the back and they are at the prison...Without giving anything away, just from the last page alone I can't wait to see what happens.
Just from the page thickness it looks like about 3/4 of the compendium is when they are at the prison and about a 1/4 is leading up to the prison.

It's tough to categorize that because the comic and tv show diverged so much, so early. There are characters in the comics who aren't on the show and vice versa, and there are storylines in one and not the other.
The end of the second chapter in the Compendium (12 issues of the comic, and 1/4 of the way through the Compendium) sees the group recently having left the farm and discovering the prison, just as season 2 of the series ended. However, the details between the group leaving Atlanta and discovering the prison are very different.
Also, the woman with the sword doesn't show up until the beginning of Chapter 4 in the comics, so there are going to be significant differences going forward as well.

I didn't say I dislike the comics, I just think they are doing a better job in the show of what the comics are attempting.
I will still read them all, like I said, I am a comic fan. The cheesey writing doesn't bother me, but compared to the great writing in the show I find it sub par.

I kind of wish the zombies would run and charge at people... would make the show more thrilling imo.

That was way funnier when I read it before it was lifted word for word from a cracked article.

In the credits, it clearly says "based on the series of graphic novels", it doesn't say "a word for word adaptation of the graphic novel". There's nothing wrong with changing it up a bit. Why can't the writers put their own spin on this story without being ripped to shreds for it?
Now I haven't read the comics so I can't comment what was better or worse or whatever, but this isolated analysis of the characters is not what I have issue with. It's the overall notion that way more often than not that if a tv show or movie strays away fromt the source material a bit, they automatically dropped the ball. I vehemently disagree with that notion.

I'm generally not a purist (I have no bones about all the changes Game of Thrones, LOTR and Watchmen went through. I also didn't have much of a problem with the season 1 changes). But when you take the things that make a story interesting and unique, then replace it with pointless garbage that has nothing to do with the limitations of a new medium, well, don't be surprised when the nay-sayers start nay-ing. I have a hard time thinking of a single adaptation that dropped the ball as badly as the first half of season two did. It's not that it was a bad adaptation, it was simply a bad show, making it hard to forgive the dismissal of the source material.

Kirkman, the writer and creator also did a graphic novel called Marvel Zombies. You should check it out. Just make sure you don't buy the crap Marvel Zombies 2, 3 or 4 which he doesn't write.
