I get enjoying skill but you'd think McDavid nursed their family dog back to health at his nipple or chauffeured their kids to school every day or something.
He's a walking sheet of plywood that on a bad day looks like a meth addict that crawled out of the river valley bush. Sid was way more worth romanticizing that way. Was also better at winning (not just racking up points for personal trophies).
A while back, I suggested we need a shorthand way to describe a night when the Oilers lose and the Flames win.
This is especially relevant with our respective trajectories this year.
So on a night where the Oilers flub their chance to tie an NHL record for longest winning streak and the Flames quietly beat the second best team in the NHL, I would submit that perhaps this occurrence should be known as a "Smith86".
This term captures both a tragic, embarrassing loss of the "Stanley Cup contenders" (™ Rogers Sportsnet) Edmonton Oilers and a triumphant victory for our own underdog Flames.

And Draisaitl quit 20' inside the opposing blue line. That's with a "record" on the line. We've all seen how hard they skate when up by multiple goals and trying to pad their stats in the last minute of a game.
You don't expect Draisaitl to care about a measly old team record, do you? Everyone knows, that it's individual records that count the most.
Sort of related but maybe better off in the PGT from last night's Flames game
1. The pre-game show on SN before the Flames game was all Oilers in the last 10 minutes or so including highlights of McDavid at the ASG skills competition. I get that SN uses one pre show for everyone but the Leafs it seems, but what's the point of a regional channel if the game that's on it (Flames) isn't the singular or at least primary focus?
2. I can understand Kelly Hrudey not wanting to be biased, but he needs to understand that this is a Flames broadcast and to say something along the lines of "I can't wait until after this game so I can watch the Oilers" isn't something Flames fans really want to hear or give a #### about. For a guy that preaches common sense, he often lacks it.
Hrudey is a good guy, but doesn't hide his loyalty to the Oilers Blue when a camera isn't in front of him. I met him and PJ Stock many years ago in Toronto during happy hour on a Friday night. I bought an extra 2 drinks while I was up at the bar and brought them over to them and introduced myself and talked about how much I enjoy their work on HNIC. Both were nice, except when I mentioned to them that I'm a lifelong Flames fan and said, "F the Oilers", Hrudey's expression immediately changed (PJ was fine and actually laughed at my comment).

TBQH, even in front a camera, on TV, during a Flames game, he occasionally let his Oilers loyalty slip out.

Meth addict sheet of plywood that crawled out of the river valley. Bravo.
I like Hrudey but his Oilers love is a bit much. Cassie Campbell was the same way, she would get so giddy talking about McHobo.
I like Hrudey as well. He seems like a genuinely great and humble person, and I think he is a good analyst. But for a guy that does so many Flames specific broadcasts, he is a little tone deaf when it comes to his admiration for the Flames biggest rival. I mean, read the room man!
In fact, I would say that Hrudey tries so hard to be a neutral observer even when the Flames aren't playing the Oilers, he gives the opponent teams more credit and praise than they often deserve. He is like the anti-homer.
