I don't know how the Canucks pay anything over a $1 million to Baertschi.
Grigorenko is in a similar situation and just signed a 1 year $675k one way contract with the Avs.
I think Baertschi's agent misspoke when saying he was waiting for the Canucks to free up salary space. Wanted to play it like they are ready to sign and just waiting for the Canucks to do something, putting some pressure on Benning through the media.
Think it backfired.

Interesting debate going on at the other board about the trade the Flames tried to make with the Avs at the 2013 draft. They offered 6, 22, and 28 for 1st so they could take Mackinnon which the Avs declined.
Looking at that today I am glad the Avs decided not to do it. The Flames got a fantastic player in Monahan and Porier and Klimchuck add to a deep group of prospects. I heard Craig Button even say with the Flames picking 3 times in the first round of 2013 it made trading the 3 picks for Dougie much easier to do

Another trade from that draft I am happy the Flames didn't make at the 2013 draft was the rumored Seguin for Monahan and Gaudreau

Colorado saved us from ourselves twice. First with matching the O'reilly contract, then with not agreeing to the Mackinnon trade. Thank you Patrick.

I'd have taken the MacKinnon deal in a heartbeat. The guys is unbelievably explosive with great hands. Don't get me wrong, Monahan has exceeded expectations, but he's no MacKinnon!

Man, I was torn up over that one.
Monahan blowing away expectations and Gaudreau removing any doubt of his value as a top prospect by handling the intensity of the NHL would probably top some of these summertime lists for years to come.. Did that one ever have legs, or just speculation by bloggers/fans?

That remains to be seen.
As it sits right now, MacKinnon is no Monahan.
Monahan has emerged as a true #1 Centre and while he spent some time injured, MacKinnon has not. Potential is one thing. Realizing it is another.

With the Flames adding Bennett to the mix I think having a guy like Monahan over MacKinnon makes even more sense now.
One for one I think MacKinnon is the better player but all 3 first rounders was not worth it in my opinion

I recall a pretty strong debate on the boards here the night before the draft and the Flames being rumored (for that package)
I recall the reasoning had something to do with the Flames not being in a position to accelerate the rebuild they were just starting. It is also clear the organization was high on both Monahan and Gaudreau.
Boston did move Seguin so it leads me to believe there were legs to that rumor. Even before the Dallas trade I think Dreger was saying the flames were in the mix for Seguin. I don't see how that deal would have got done without Johnny going the other way

Just like Vinny, with the addition of Bennett I'd rather have our potentially lethal entire second line available to us over MacKinnon.
Also hard to say how retaining those extra pieces has affected the team's moves since then, but IMO the depth completely opened up our GM's options, and also forces a higher level of compete from the rest of our pool pushing for spots. Pretty happy with where we are today

Leafs would have to take a bad contract like Raymond but the Flames could probably part with one of their better forward prospects (Granlund, Klimchuck, Porier, Jankowski) and toss in a Wotherspoon and that could be something the Leafs bite on?

I'm a firm believer that if Johnny Hockey had been 6'0 (and a weight ratio to match) he would of been a top 3 pick in the 2011 draft, possibly even #1 over RNH.

So maybe the Leafs want a package of Granlund, Shore, Jooris, Raymond lol

Vinny, Eklund must be using you as a source. He just posted a rumour of JVR to Calgary.
OOPS: I see you were already aware of the rumour.

In hind sight it worked out great for the flames getting the deal rejected. That said i was all for it before draft day. There was no guarantee that the flames were going to get Monahan. There was lots of speculation that Carolina might take him or Edmonton would trade up to get him. Flames could have ended up with Lindholm instead. Thats not saying Lindholm is not going to be a great player, but i doubt he would have acomplished what Monahan has done at the start of his career if he was drafted a flame.
