Must be the result of some update in the app. Mine is doing that too and it didn't before. It's also no longer returning me to where I left off when I come back to a thread.

Can someone please share the YouTube link for that video that Gaskal made? I would love to share that video with my family that's the fans of the no good team.
Also slightly off topic, but I met Rodger millions over the weekend at a private event and asked him about Gio and his contract status. He echoed all our thoughts that Gio's agent is slightly hard to deal with and he expects the flames management to wait it out but hopeful that a suitable contract that suits both parties can be negotiated. His words, "what's the difference between 7 and 9 million"

Two million dollars, Roger.

I dunno Roger, the difference appears to be a number that is in excess of what 99% of the world will earn over their entire lifetime. Multiplied over 5+ years.

Seems fairly significant to me.
Fully agreed but the fact that the contract is signed in U.S. dollars, 7 million U.S. Dollars is very comparable to 9 million Canadian dollars. Add to the fact that we have a chance to be something special in the fact that we have a young and upcoming team (trying my best to not sound like the team up north). I would be extremely disappointed if he didn't sign for term and money that suited both parties
Edit: don't want to de-rail this awesome thread. Mods please feel free to merge in the Gio thread

But that's the point, isn't it? He'll have over $20M in career earnings by the time his current deal expires - if his next deal is worth $35M or $45M, is Mark Giordano even going to notice the difference?

Dude, this is absolutely brilliant! Thank you for putting this together and it was EPIC! I always lurk when on CP but had to sign in to "thank" this. Great job, Gaskal!

The difference is millions of dollars. Sure, he isn't likely to go broke and be like "gee I wish I signed for 45m instead of 35m because I'd have 10m left instead of 0m" but he's also going to want to have as much money as possible to set his family up for generations. He's not going to do the Flames favors to save them 10m when he could just pocket it. If it were that simple, he would've signed by now. I'm sure in the end, he will feel entitled to every last penny he got and possibly more. It's a millionaire bargaining with a billionaire (represented by Tre) over millions of dollars, Gio's going to want to make hay while the sun is shining because this chance is never coming again for him.
We'd all like to think we'd be above asking for more in that situation because, really, even just $5m would be easy to live on for your entire life. Go on a 500k trip to Vegas just to say you did it (or some other extravagance just because), and then live off the interest without ever having to work again. The difference is these guys are trying to plan out the rest of their lives and they want to maintain their current lifestyles until they die AND set their families up for generations. He's not going to do Murray Edwards or the Calgary Flames any favors here with those things considered. If they want him, they will have to pay because Gio likely believes he is one of the best and deserves it just like any player in his position would.
if you were in their shoes, you're perspective would be completely different, you'd be clawing for every last penny too. He's going to push Calgary right to the edge of their comfort level by the time the deal is signed, and rightfully so.

Gio will be 33 when his new deal kicks in. He hasn't played 82 games in 5 years. He misses close to 20 games a season. If he wants 9M, he can take a 4 year deal.
And the 'set up his family for generations' argument is a bit disingenuous. I'm sure none of his grandkids are going to have a problem affording a Georgetown education if they desire one. The interest alone on his career earnings is enough to finance a fantastically lifestyle, and I'm sure he invests his money.
Again, I get the reality of the system they operate within. But these contracts are dick measuring contests. Nothing more. Show me a good financial decision you could make for 9M that you couldn't also make for 7.5.
