No, we gained a playoff rental for likely a very minimal cost

Not going to resign him with Ortio making a push and Gillies coming up.

You mean the goalie that has played great the last 3 games when we are in a PLAYOFF RACE
ffs, by your logic every pending UFA in the league should be traded

Ya know, we could always resign him...
Hiller could get traded at the draft or offseason...
It's not a forgone conclusion that we lose him for nothing... And you don't trade a goalie, UFA or not, who is winning you games and playing great when you're in a playoff race! This is great asset management by the Flames. We win by not dealing him.

Not exactly "encouraging" a playoff push if that's our only move.

That is very short sighted on your part. Giving up a premium for a rental during a rebuild is not the way to go.
I don't doubt he was seeing what was available, but not breaking the roster apart to sell off assets helps this season and not giving up picks or prospects for over-priced rentals is the best move big picture.

To be honest Trade Deadline day is underwhelming and a little bit over-exaggerated now. It has such a 2005 feel to it now. A lot of teams have become smarter and instead of hitting the panic button right at the end they conclude their deals early if they get the right package.

Meh, Only NHL goalie trade was in the Isles-Sabres deal (and Chicago didn't get any calls on Raanta). Goalie market was probably pretty light.

Another ridiculous, short sighted post.
Ortio is hurt, so we have no back-up if Hiller gets hurt or falters.
Having Ramo as either our starter or 1B as we battle for a playoff spot is certainly not "nothing".

It doesn't look like the market is great for goalies at the moment. It was reported that Chicago wasn't even receiving offers for Raanta. Besides, most teams contending at the moment are already set up in net (if they weren't, they wouldn't be contending). And teams that aren't contending, are likely happy to wait until the offseason when more goalies will be on the market instead of shopping now.
I still think there is a chance we re-sign him and trade a goalie in September based on what happens at camp.
