You should read the story about Roy and his blowout. One of the best backstories ever!
It was ALL because of Mike Vernon! haha

I bet Markstrom really regrets moving to the Devils right now.
|
I can't think of any reason that they would have kept him in other than Allen being sick or nursing an injury. After the 5th goal it was just cruel. They could have pulled him after the second period to avoid the embarrassment of being pulled in front of the whole crowd.
Most of the goals were on good scoring opportunities, but the goalie still needs to stop a few of those.

Its always funny to look at these home run deals and see that posters still complained about the return. This is the best older goalie trade in years, maybe ever.

I think this is a perfect example of Conroy being patient and getting the return he wanted. Even made Fitzgerald throw a hissy fit, and made him come back in the summer. It may not have been that 10th pick in the draft or Mercer, but Conroy still got his 1st pick and a young roster player. As someone mentioned better then giving in and settling for Hotlz.

And also, an example of why people should trust his talent evaluation, since plenty of people here were dismissive of Bahl, who I think has become a very solid defensive presence.

Many wanted Holtz or Mercer in the deal instead of Bahl.
I think hindsight is 20/20 here.
At the time Holtz was the younger player with the higher ceiling (in my opinion). A couple years later it's obvious that Bahl is the better piece for us and Holtz never really panned out.
I think we would of been happy with Mercer too though.
Solid work by CC, moving Markstrom with 2 years of term left for Reschny and Bahl.

Feel bad for Markstrom. I was so excited when we got him
One thing about him though, he never blamed others for his performance.

Mercer is doing OK this year, probably because of increased ice time with Hughes out. He will end up with 50 points unless he loses a lot of time when Hughes comes back. But I'd rather have Bahl. Chris Tanev types are less common than people think, and Bahl has that potential.

His talent evaluation remains to be seen.
For prospects and waiver pickups, it appears to be good.
For pro players, that Yegor extension is looking ugly. We know he tried to get Nic Hague this summer which also would have been ugly. Farabee & Frost are what they were projected to be...no real change from what they were in Philly (I would have preferred to trade that 2nd+ for Zegras who Philly replaced Frost/Farabee with). Grushnikov looks like a dud.
I think the Flames need better pro scouts.
