2 Canadian Cabinet ministers would be banned from entering under these rules, Minister of Immigration Ahmed Hussen (Somalia) and Minister of Status of Women Maryam Monsef (Iran).

The same reason most people really don't care about issues in other countries, because they have enough of their own problems to worry about.

Do you care about Japan's immigration and refugee policies, Hong Kong's political issues, Duterte's harsh crackdown on people involved with drugs, Mexico's protests because of gas price hikes, etc, etc?

Hey, just mention oil and tar sands to Jane and she'll put a stop to it, quick quick quick.

The Orange Fuhrer is just getting more and more horrifying. I have been dragging my heels with getting my Canadian citizenship but no more. Starting Monday, this happens. I only wish I could renounce my US citizenship NOW, because I'd do so in a flat minute.

You underestimate people.
Regardless, I'd think America is on a bit of a different level than say the Philippines.

Small glimmer of hope, maybe, in what will be a long fight.

Federal Court Halts Trump's Immigration Ban

Quote:
The federal court for the Eastern District of New York issued an emergency stay halting President Donald Trump’s executive order banning entry to the US from seven majority-Muslim countries tonight, following widespread protests at airports around the country.

The court ruled on a habeas corpus petition filed by the ACLU on behalf of Hameed Khalid Darweesh and Sameer Abdulkhaleq Alshawi, who were denied entry to the US upon landing at JFK airport in New York City and detained indefinitely by Customs and Border Patrol. Darweesh spent a decade working for the United States military in Iraq as an interpreter and engineer and had been granted an entry visa after background checks; Alshawi had been granted a visa in order to join his wife and son who are already permanent residents of the US after their similar service with the US military.

The court’s stay is temporary; it’s clear that the White House will argue to have it reinstated as soon as possible.

Apparently a federal judge in Brooklyn has ordered a stay of Trump's executive order banning refugees and immigrants:

I've noticed foxnews.com has taken at least a tepid anti Trump stand today. The only hope is for the more mainstream and moderate right wing Republicans to take a stand against him. I think there were a lot of people who voted for him that didn't really believe he'd do all the crazy things he promised.

If the White House had any brains among them they're rescind and re-issue the order with clear direction to the effect that it doesn't apply to people with existing visas. Of course, they won't, because that would be an admission that they made a mistake.

As for the stay, I don't know how the jurisdiction of various US courts works, but it seems strange that a judge in Brooklyn has the authority to singlehandedly stay the effect of an executive order. You'd think they'd be more along the lines of reading it down so as not to apply in a particular case. Guess we'll see what happens; at least it's in front of the Court now, so one hopes that means it gets fast tracked to the SCOTUS and they get the opportunity to reinstate some sanity.

She might qualify for dual. I know my wife needs to get it in gear and do that too.

Be interesting to see how Trump responds to the judge. If it's anything like Curiel, he's in for a rough couple weeks. Also be curious if the ACLU gets targeted now as well.

Come on man. At least give the guy a chance like people have been telling you to. It's only been just a week and he'll get to those literal naval minefields in a a month or two.

I need to find out but I really don't want dual and may not be able to get it, due to being adopted. My brother is also adopted, but he was adopted after we moved to Canada, and was born here. He was trying to get dual with the US a number of years ago but they refused it on the grounds that he was adopted. I haven't checked it out to see if the reverse is true here.

Spotted this gem on my facebook feed with the comment:

"Trudeau needs to get his s*** together period himself as a leader also to take care of Canadian first as there are tons of people out of work because of him and his government which in turns means lack of or no: food on the table, people losing their life savings, just no monies period, loss of homes etc etc etc.......he needs to turn things around here first and foremost before letting refugees, and whoever else into our country"

Stuff like this is very disappointing to see, there seems to be so much misinformation out there about refugees.

Ah gottcha. I haven't looked into it recently either. And I also seem to remember there was a cut off date depending on the year you were born. I think it was some time in the late 70's but I"m not 100 percent.

My understanding is that the stay is only for those in transit or in the USA during the time that the EO was issued. It sounds like they are mostly preventing forced eviction from the country. The rest of the EO still stands and the ban is still in place.

We can look forward to more of that as O'Leary stokes the fire by telling Trudeau to cozy up to Trump more.

The majority of Trump voters in the rust belt have an incredibly limited concept of the world outside of their back yard. This is why they complain about the "liberal elites" on the coasts, because all they ever see are people just like themselves in these small dying coal/manufacturing towns, and the closest thing they get to diversity is watching Homeland.

Too globalized and interconnected. Americans will watch their standard of living deteriorate under Trump, and then they will start to care a little more.
I don't think you grasp what life is like for people in extreme small town America in the rust belt. Through much of West Virginia you don't readily have access to the internet or cell coverage, so smart phones aren't doing anyone much good around there. Schools are horrifically underfunded and libraries are few and far between. There isn't much opportunity to see outside of that incredibly narrow worldview unless you actively try for it.

Which is why those people while railing against the "coastal elites" voted in a NYC silver-spooned billionaire reality star, because they have no way to crosscheck anything he spouts at them.

That might be the best thing about a Trump presidency. It's waking up the fire of democracy among people in this country, and you're likely to see far more people engaging in the process in the future. After the Women's March, there was a seminar held to teach these women what they would need to go about running for office.

If we can keep the whole damn thing from burning down, there is hope for the future.

1) Internment camps are still a horrific infringement on the rights of others. Even if they're not dead, those people's lives were forever affected, in a negative way.

2) Trump is a power-hungry buffoon who has surrounded himself with fascists and anarchists who want to watch the world burn, and as long as they stroke his ego, he'll sign whatever they place in front of him.
