I think if Kenny reads this thread , then we would have gone back to the retros full time already. Time for PresidentNext

Fine with alterations to the original jerseys if desired but personally find it really lame when teams add or change primary colors or logos, thank god the Flames haven't done that at least. I think most teams that do it don't have much to be proud of in their history (like the Canucks for example).
For the Flames, original colors, we won the cup and had our best era by far in the "retros" so for me I have the best associations with that color scheme, I think it looks better (subjectively) and I wish they had never changed to begin with. Get that many grew up with the black so that's sacred for them but for me it was trying to be trendy in the 90s during an era where everyone was adding black or a black third jersey - thank god they didn't add teal at least I guess.
But regardless of your take on black in the color scheme, we can all agree that the current jerseys are brutal with all the piping and mismatched patches, let's get something new and fresh in here.
|
Definitely agree that the piping needs to go no matter what. I really like the concepts that modernize the original jerseys with some cleaning up done and things like the shoulder patch that still work with the original template.
The Jays did a really good job returning to something that is a completely classic look and fits in the team's historic identity yet they modernized everything, including the logo. Flames don't need to touch the logo though.
I really think your point about success is great. I think the pedestal style, or at least striping, is a really unique and fantastic design in pro sports. However, because it was worn in a period of zero success that was sandwiched between more successful era where markedly different styles were worn people don't like it. If they reintroduced pedestal styles and the Flames won some playoff rounds it could easily be a huge component of the Calgary Flames identity.

The Flames retro should be the everyday jerseys.
Bar non the best jerseys in the league.

With Adidas being the sponsor next year, hopefully the Flames listen to the majority of their fan base and go with the retros full-time or at least a modernized look of the retros. It's classic, clean and just a beautiful looking jersey. I'm not sure how I feel on the black alternate jersey. If the Flames are adamant on keeping black in the color scheme, hopefully they bring back the 04 jersey.

Although that is a great attempt I'd prefer to see yellow and white separated as they tend to blend together when seen from distance. The stripes and outlines should IMHO look like this:
Also, I've realized that classic lettering is probably a better fit for retros.

Calgary has the worst jerseys in the league. It would be great if CSEC could change that, thanks.
Vintage would be perfect, anything different can't be worse.

I think Anaheim has us beat. But we're probably second worst now that Florida updated. Unacceptable really.

sports teams, a lot of them, have an idea that they seem to know better than everyone else. in almost all aspects of capitalism the company will strive hard to give people what they want and not tell people what they want. this idea is lost on lots of teams like the jets, the bombers until last year, and the flames.
it would seem that more and more teams are catching on, pittsburgh is back to the black and yellow, edmonton went back to the classic 80s... the list is growing. it would be nice if teams just stoped trying to re-invent the wheel and go with simple designs.

Yeah Anaheim isn't great but i'd still say they have better uni's than Calgary. Incorporating the orange for OC was a nice touch, the D in the shape of a duck foot works for.
Not great but still better than the current Calgary jerseys.

Yeah I actually always loved those. Don't think MacInnis ever wore it though, could be wrong.

You are correct. His first year in St Louis was 1994-95, which was the first year the Flames wore the pedestals.

The pedestal jerseys are misunderstood and definitely better than the current ones. If you ignore their namesake (the pedestal) they are actually quite nice jerseys. At least they don't have a blue flag patch and vertical striping.

No vertical striping...but it did have those 45° striping
The pedestal jersey was the start of non-horizontal and suddenly ending stripes. The "V" and angled sleeves came after (horse head, black 'C'). Current with jerseys (other than the vertical stripes) have that piping that comes up the sides, around the armpit, and ends mid-bicep.
