At the end of all of this, I hope there is a place or special place for Ken King most of all and the former ownership group such as Harley + Greats. Maybe even some of the special players.
It's really good to remember a lot of these people who were beyond their roles to inspire us all beyond our roles.
Definitely a nice Lanny (with cup), Jarome (with Olympic GM) full size statue.

CSEC gets the money from the other events. Flames games won’t drive tourism and concerts are negligible when most big acts will hit up Vancouver and Edmonton. It’s fine if you want an arena, it’s just a #### deal.
|
I would’ve been fine with any variant of a good deal over the last ten years.
For a myriad of reasons, some within our control, some without, here we are.
At this point, I want the arena. I want the prime riverfront real estate to actually be prime.
I want downtown to be vibrant and thriving.
It’s only getting more expensive. I wish it had been done earlier.
It is what it is.

They’d hit up both.

To base a voting decision on the chance that voting for one party over the other could lead to the Flames leaving is insane, and some of you are like: "#### YEAH! I couldn't possibly vote NDP if they won't blindly accept this deal! But the NDP will raise taxes!"
For the love of god can some of you think critically here? When the NDP is asking questions about the fiscal responsibility of capital investments, and they're being criticized by conservatives for it.. what bizarro land are we in?
Like, if the deal is specifically for investments for roads, the green line, CRL contribution etc.. then that's awesome, and the NDP should support it. But holding any of those details back is purely to hold the spectre of "what if" over the election. You all should be livid.
|
You've been away awhile (since before Covid?). Our province has been battleground zero for QAnon/far right politics taking over the voting population and they've won.
What you may see as simple critical thinking and rational thought is lost on a large percentage of our province at this point. They're gone. In their little world it's "left is progressive/woke/socialist and right is "the lesser of two evils". I'd love to speak beyond that, but unfortunately and tragically it doesn't reach beyond that anymore. We're toast.
Trust me man, I'm in the trenches of lower to middle class earners and I'm shocked each day at the level of "We need to vote hard this election to make sure the NDP doesn't get in" sentiment amongst our uneducated/poorly educated/indoctrinated "Alberta votes conservative and anyone else is socialist" voting base. We're honesty ****ed. CP doesn't see it because this message board is allegedly affluent and well educated.

They literally can't even see how centrist the Alberta NDP is and honestly they wouldn't give a **** if you prepared a full presentation to explain. They're far too divided and simple for that. It's really sad.
We're doomed to tax breaks and handouts to corporations and billionaires as our education and health care will continue to crumble, it's inevitable at this point.

Taylor Swift has been mentioned a bunch of times for some reason as something we'd get with a new arena. She has literally done stadium tours since around 2015. A new arena is not bringing Taylor Swift in, in fact even Edmonton would be lucky to bring her in when they are the Stadium show capital of Canada.

Can someone in the know about these things tell us how common it is for NHL owners today to build their own stadiums? I am trying to get a grasp on how unusual it is for government to be paying majority costs. Is this just how stadiums get built today? My sense is that these massive infrastructure developments, particularly central city facilities, require massive government involvement and, unfortunately, investment to get built. Right or wrong?

Any chance you could pull a hard left and redirect to the Alberta political thread and enlighten all them? Save this one for new arena conversation and excitement.

Some are completely private but are definitely the exception. It is usually on a scale of okay to terrible for government spending and what they get in return. Last deal was in the okay area and this one as presented is firmly in the terrible slot.

The last 3 NHL arenas that were built (T-Mobile, UBS and Climate Pledge) were each privately financed.
While they are bigger markets, I still think we're being fed a bunch of nonsense about how it's impossible for do this without taxpayer dollars.

I'm surprised nobody has asked yet if the new event centre will sell the John Bean Burrito at $22 each.
