It's not even about the cap space. I think the Flames are a better team with Brouwer off the roster. Cap space is just a bonus.

My general thought about buyouts is that you only do it if the team performs better without the player on the ice; the minute a team is paying a player to NOT play is when a buyout should be conducted. Does Brouwer qualify for that? It's too early to tell. He might fit in better with a coaching change, and in a more protected role. We also don't exactly have a definitive replacement for him on our weak RW, so that is an extra risk.
My thought is to not buy him out; save that for next year and if things get really bad, negotiate a trade if possible once the buyout window passes.

Honestly I've never approached Tavares to the Flames as even a remote possibility, so, yes.
Though personally I think the Flames are in a better spot than the Islanders.

Also, the Isles are losing two of their top 6 d to free agency, the Flames have all their D locked up. Plus the Flames have Smith signed, the Isles #1 goalie who started the most games for them and posted the best numbers out of their 3 goalies is also a UFA.

I disagree, I see very similar teams. Both have underachieved for years. We might be a a bit ahead of them but not by much and the post I quoted said a team that already has the pieces in place, we don't. At least the Islanders could bring in a Trotz or an AV to help push the notion they are geared up to win. Is our pitch going to be a head coach that has failed for four straight years as an NHL coach and then at the last Worlds as well? While we as Flames fans can try and be positive about Peters he does not exactly scream winning coach to a player who has his choice of where he wants to go.

I don't see Trotz leaving a cushy Washington job for NYI IMO.
A real chance to repeat as cup champions over a pretty unstable team right now. Easy pick IMO.

I'm no "the Flames are a truly amazing franchise with a winning history" guy. Truthfully I'm fed up with this franchises garbage track record.
But you said they were in the "exact same boat" in the post I responded to. They are not. While the Flames are not lighting the world on fire, the Islanders have even been worse, which is saying something.

I am still not even convinced that Trotz doesn’t walk away altogether and retire.

Trotz doesn't want to come back to Washington. That's been pretty widely reported.

Does anyone know why? I'm curious.
Is it because it was rumored he was about one loss away from being canned this season?

I just heard from the supposed insider reporters on TV that he didn't like management (and they weren't keen on him either).
Now winning changes a lot but mostly from their perspective. He probably doesn't care as much.
ETA: probably a lot comes from the fact they didn't exercise the extension option after least year even though they won the Presidents trophy.

Word from Friedman this morning is Todd Reirden has been groomed by management as the successor to Trotz. And it sounded like there might be different camps in the organization - a Trotz camp and a Reirden camp.
Quote:
The likely number one issue: the status of associate coach Todd Reirden, who was promoted from an assistant coach two seasons ago. As part of that deal, the Capitals prevented Reirden from interviewing for any head coaching positions.

Not sure I totally agree there. Resentment may have built up from some players over Brouwer because GG played him at times when his play didn't warrant his ice time. Brouwer at 4.5 million playing half the time on the 4th line or as a healthy scratch is a distraction. And it can undermine his role as a veteran leader when his own teammates don't believe in his on ice abilities.
But most importantly management may decide that having Brouwer in the lineup merely holds back players like Lazar, Hathaway and Foo who bring much the same things Brouwer does at a fraction of the cost. If they really believe Lazar can be a great 3rd/4th line RW and Hathaway can be a good 4th line RW and Foo is close to being a 2nd/3rd line RW then where does Brouwer even fit in the lineup? He becomes a roadblock to the progression and ice time of your younger players.
I think there's several reasons besides using the immediate cap space that may mean Brouwer is bought it. I wouldn't bet on him being bought out but I think it's a solid possibility for the above reasons and the cap space reason.

Flames were better than the Islanders last season...now take their best player and put him on the Flames. Obviously Calgary with JT is miles ahead of the Islanders without him.

IMO we overestimate this psychological stuff. But when it comes to that I think actual players respect seniority a lot more than fans. And they probably respect Brouwer's ring a fair bit too. And I don't think they look at salaries at all when thinking about ice time. And I don't think Bennett, for example, was jealous of Brouwer's (mainly) fourth line ice time, nor was Hathaway (who did far less than Brouwer with much better linemates).
