Anything's possible, but I think he'd be better off leaving as a free agent (can probably get a lot more money because of his all-star appearance)

Arencibia's MLB Debut is in fact the best debut any baseball player has ever had in MLB history.

Only 3 players have ever had 2 HR's in their debut, but none of the 3 had any other hits in those games, and for total bases, the highest any other player had was 10, one short of Arencibia's 11.

Only one player ever had 5 hits in their debut, back in 1894, but had 4 singles and a double.

Awesome stuff.

Unbelievable debut. I was hoping he'd come in and look capable and comfortable........what he did was really surreal. Sure makes the future look even a bit brighter, even if it was just one game. He's obviously not going to tear it up every game, but at least you can see the skill level is definitely there.

Quote:
"I could never have imagined this, ever," an emotional Arencibia, at times fighting back tears, said afterwards. "I was pretty surprised because my first at-bat, I really wasn't that nervous. I was pretty even-keeled and then after that I was pretty comfortable in the box.

"But I imagined I'd have at least one strikeout in my debut, just because of the nerves."

Instead, Arencibia looked like he belonged from the start. Even home-plate umpire Mark Carlson was impressed.

"He's like, `Man, you've got a great day,"' relayed Arencibia. "I was like, `Where am I going to go from here?' This is not going to happen every day."
Quote:
"I couldn't have dreamed of it any better," said Arencibia, who was given two tickets and the balls from his homer and double. "I knew (my mom) was there, and that was huge for me. It's just been a really special day that I could have never pictured like this."

Another bump of this, Jays 2nd round pick RHP Justin Nicolino has signed leaving only 4 of the jays picks from the top 10 rounds unsigned with all 4 possible/likely to sign. It's good that they have spent all this money on these players. Probably will be seeing a few of these guys in the Majors in 2013-2014.

RHP

1st - Deck McGuire - Probably will sign the night before the deadline
2nd - Justin Nicolino - Signed
4th - Sam Dyson - Possible
10th - Tyler Shreve - Doubtful
17th - Myles Jaye - Doubtful
21st - Chris Marlowe
25th - Brando Tessar
28th - Adaric Kelly
31st - Luis Benitez
36th - David Whitehead
37th - Chad Green
39th - Nick Vander Tuig
46th - Connor Smith
47th - Gabriel Romero

LHP

8th - Logan Ehlers - Possible
13th - Tyler Painton - Extremely doubtful
15th - Zak Adams - signed
43rd - Ronald Schreurs

Catchers

27th - Eric Arce
48th - Nick Studer
50th - Kelly Norris-Jones

2nd Base

44th - Mott Hyde

Short Stop

9th - Brandon Mims - Possible

3rd Base

18th - Kris Bryant - Possible but unlikely
41st - Seth Conner

OF

12th - Omar Cotto - extremely doubtful
22nd - Aaron Westlake
45th - Phil Diedrick

How many homers did the Jays hit today? 6? I don't know what's in their Gatorade, but I like it!

7.

Brandon Mims is rumoured to be getting 3rd round money, and Ehlers is expected to get a big over-slot deal too. No word on Shreve, and it is a lot more likely Cotto signs than Bryant.

Why are some players doubtful/extremely doubtful, etc.
Are the not interested in the Blue Jays, are the Blue Jays not interested in them?

Im not that familar with signing draft picks in the MLB.

I assume it's that many of them will be going to college and that they feel the Jays are not offering them enough $$$ to forego that option.

It's because the MLB draft is a joke.

Some players can refuse to sign with the team that drafted them for many reasons. Usually players taken after the 20th round that are not college seniors will not sign (the college seniors have no where else to go, so they usually will)

The reasons usually have to do with money. For example, Dickie Thon Jr. who the jays took in the 5th round, should've gone in the first round. The reason for him sliding was that he was looking for a certain dollar figure (1.5 million) and the jays decided to pick him up even though 5th rounders usually are only supposed to get a hundred thousand or so.

Also, sometimes you'll see high school and college freshmen re-enter the draft to raise their stock. A high schooler that would normally be drafted in the 2nd/3rd round, if they progress, when they are again eligible for the draft can be a top 10 pick. Usually the top 10 get paid 2.5+ million dollars, where the 2nd/3rd round picks usually get about 600K or so.

It really depends.

Thanks for the response.
Why are there so many rounds in the MLB draft?

There is six levels of development for North American players: AAA, AA, A+, A, SS, R.

You need a minimum of 150 players to fit those rosters, so teams generally sign 25-35 of their players each year since the majority of players do not make it and are released within 2-5 years.

Probably has to be some sort of agreement with the NCAA, I'd imagine.

Also, every once in a while you get a real gem out of the later rounds. Pujols was a 34th round pick IIRC

Morrow with 11 k's and only one BB through 6 innings. Wells just makes a circus catch to end the 6th. Get him some runs!

Dislocated toe for Wells on the catch. It was a good catch but nothing spectacular in my opinion.

Strikes out the side in the 7th. He's right at the century mark for pitches, going to need a gutsy last two innings.
