|
Franson is much better than you're letting on. I'd argue he's on par with Sekera, who has become the most overrated defenseman in the last few months thanks to the media portraying him as an underrated darling at the trade deadline. Both Sekera and Franson are 2nd pairing guys and nothing more.

I have a feeling that Semin will sign with Vancouver. The next winger for their revolving door.

Disagree. We need a secondary scoring line threat. Don't think we still have that despite adding Frolik. Bennett will need to be eased in.

He doesn't seem like the type of player Jim Benning would go for, but if there's a buy-low candidate out there this year, it's him.

I disagree strongly. Raymond had better stats last season than Semin and we want to get rid of Raymond for non production. I'd much rather give one of our youngsters a shot on the 2nd line, such as Ferland, Bouma, Jooris, Shore, Colborne, or Poirier.
This gets to be a common theme when a young team has some success, they start signing UFAs and forget what got them their success.

Couldn't agree more.
The names of all the old guys are being thrown around as additions to our lineup, and none of it makes any sense.
Good thing Treliving said that he is only interested in age appropriate players and the rebuild continues.
It makes 100% sense to give ice time to the young guys, so they can grow.
Last thing I want to see is bunch of hired guns destroying the cohesive unit we have build with laziness.

No we don't. Flames were what, 6th in scoring in the NHL last season? Plus we're adding Frolik (good for 40pts) and Hamilton (probably 50) and Bennett for a full year.
I doubt someone like Semin would get offered a contract by Treliving anyways unless he passes Hartley's eye exam via a PTO.

Gaudreau Monahan Frolik
Ferland Bennett Hudler
Bouma Backlund Colborne
I agree, I don't see the need for more offensive punch up front. If Ferland and Bennett don't produce as expected the Flames might have a problem but lets wait and see what happens before making any more changes.

Dunno where to put this... what do you think will happen with the Coyote's goaltending coach Sean Burke? I don't think it'll be with us, and a funny tidbit is he lost a minor league starter gig to Karri Ramo.
Supposed to be a guy who helped huge on restoring Dubnyk.

Sean Burke's gone somewhere. Read a tweet saying he was moving on but I haven't heard where. And he won't be goaltending coach otherwise he'd have been snatched up faster than a smartie in a fat camp.
Been rumors of him getting an AGM job somewhere.

If you don't look at that 2nd line and realize that Ferland being up on it is not anywhere close to ideal, you have firmly put your I fell in love with the boys during last season goggles on.
I'm not saying we should get Semin at all, but this team is still missing one second line player at this point, assuming Bennett does continue to look ready for top 6 duty. Maybe that upgrade will indeed come in the form of a young guy like Ferland, and I'm more than willing to wait to see how the young guy develops, but this team is still in need of some improvement on the front end.

Eh not too worried about our winger depth. In between our additions this year, the defense, our scoring will be fine. Every team has holes and weaknesses somewhere in the roster, that's the product of the cap. Patrick freakin Maroon plays on the Ducks top line. The Rags ice a bunch of speedy grinders + Rick Nash. Who knows Mason Raymond could play his way back into the top 6.
Now our goaltending though that could use an upgrade

In the interest of seeing this team become a perennial cup contender, as opposed to a 1-hit wonder this coming year, I would like the Flames to be able to dangle the carrot of 1, if not all 3, top 6 forward spots for a young kid.
It's not like there are a shortage of candidates.

It may not be Ferland, but I don't think you need an elite guy at every position in the top 6. I tend to think you need two forwards that are great and play welll together, plus another guy who can fit in OK. A guy like Ferland, or Bouma or even Colborne, who can be more physical but still can put up some points, can complement a Bennett/Hudler combo. I could see Bennett getting hurt trying to play that game otherwise.

I don't know what candidates you are talking about. Flames have no prospects that can step into a top 6 role.
Even Bennett is best suited for the 3rd line centre spot at this stage, maybe by the end of the year he is the second line centre.
Anyone can physically occupy a top 6 spot yes, but being an actual top 6 player is completely different.
You want to the Flames to be a perennial cup contender, then stop rushing prospects into positions they aren't ready for. That is the Oiler way and it hasn't worked. This year will be different with McDavid, but this type of player comes around once every generation.

I asked after the draft, and now I ask again:
Where is Chicago in all of this player movement?
As far as I can see they still have to drop significant salary, at least one big contract, and I think their expectation for a Sharp return was a bit ridiculous.

Bennett, Colborne, Backlund, Frolik, Bouma, Poirier, jones, Raymond, Backlund, Byron Granlund, Shore and Jooris. That's all assuming that the First line stays intact to start next season.
I'm not interested in shoehorning anybody either, but it's not like there is a lack of competition. I don't think that any of those players had what will in the end be their career year last season, outside of Bouma.
To add, the Flames had a huge number of 10+ goal scorers, and 2 more with 8. Not a far reach to think one from the list above could reach 20, and 2 more 15 goals. Nor is it a reach to think that 4-5 are capable of 35+ points. Frolik was and Bouma already were at that level, and many others were close.

My ideal trade target is JVR. Still only 26 and is a big body that can score 30. No idea what we give up but my ideal lines would be
Gaudreau-Monahan-JVR
Frolik-Bennett-Hudler
Bouma-Backlund-Jones
Ferland-Stajan-Colborne
So maybe the Leafs want a package of Granlund, Shore, Jooris, Raymond lol
