This was incorrect. At this point they haven't announced the non-subsidized price. That's what the CSR should have told you. Speaking of CSR phone conversations, I have a new story!

I just got off the phone with one. My problem was that I've been hearing that most iphone 3g customers have to wait 2 years to upgrade their hardware, yet when i log into the website it tells me that I can do it in July (one year from purchase). I wanted to talk to somebody to confirm that the website was correct.

I got a guy who answered all my questions and said that not only can I upgrade in one month, but they'll send it to me in the mail so I won't have to wait in store. He did say one thing that I hadn't heard yet, and that was that I HAD to do the upgrade through them over the phone, and that I wouldn't be able to do it in store. He also said that I'll have to pay something on top of the subsidized price (up to $135) but that was based on how long I've been with Rogers and how much $$ I've spent with them in the past.

So all is going well, but then I ask him why I'm so special ... why do the majority of iphone owners have to wait 2 years while I only have to wait 1? He said he had heard nothing about iphone owners having to wait 2 years and that all customers should be able to upgrade after 1 year. Should I consider this to be a red flag? I've not only heard the 2 year thing, but I've heard it from Rogers themselves (both from twitter guy and an email from them). Am I believing this guy because he told me what I wanted to hear?

Let me say that phoning them was shockingly painless. I wasn't even on hold at anytime. I got bounced around a bit, but I never waited longer than 5 seconds to get a representative. To top it off, it wasn't even a call centre in India! Hopefully I don't come off like a racist, but that's very appreciated.

I wonder if I could find someone who wants a 3G iPhone and is a new customer to Fido, then I'll sell them my phone for a good price and then they buy a 3GS and I pay them for it and I get that one.

I was going to do this with my wife when the new phones came out, but she REALLY wanted one for Christmas so I got her one, and now we're both locked into contracts.

The new Tethering FAQs from Rogers:

Quote:
Tethering FAQs

What is tethering or wireless modem?
Tethering or wireless modem functionality is the use of your phone (such as your iPhone) as a wireless modem to connect to the internet from your computer. You can connect your phone to your computer through Bluetooth wireless technology or the USB cable provided with your handset.

Can I tether on my iPhone?
To use tethering or wireless modem functionality you require the new iPhone 3G S, or an iPhone 3G that has been upgraded with the new iPhone OS 3.0 software. Until December 31, 2009, if you have subscribed to a data plan which includes at least 1GB of data you may use tethering as part of the volume of data included in your plan at no additional charge. Tethering cannot be used with data plans of less then 1GB.

Will data charges for tethering be free?
No, tethering data usage will come out of your existing data bucket.

When will I be able to tether on my iPhone?
Customers with an iPhone 3G S will be able to tether right away. For customers with an iPhone 3G, who have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0, we expect tethering to be fully operational for all iPhone customers shortly after the OS 3.0 release.

What will happen on December 31, 2009 when the promotion expires?
Rogers will continue to enable tethering on devices that allow it, but data plans will be adjusted to better reflect the way customers are using tethering services.

How do I tether on my iPhone?
Please visit Apple.com for instructions http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-3g/tethering.html

Does that mean we can only tether until the end of the year, at which point we'd have to pay extra, or, We have until the end of the year to have it included in our plans?

Thanks guys for the replies.

One more quick question. With the OS 3.0, MMS is now supported on the iPhone. Anyone use MMS before (on any other phones)? Is MMS part of the your SMS package or is there a seperate add-on for that (i.e. if i'm allowed 2500 SMS, is MMS included in that number)?

Thanks.

Good question, but I'd expect mms to be treated differently than sms. I only go with this because I haven't heard anything to the contrary.

From the same link I posted earlier:

What is MMS?
Multi-Media Messaging Service (MMS) messages or Picture/Video messages enable you to send messages that include video, photos, audio, and contact info. Even tap to snap a picture or shoot a video right inside Messages.

Are there Picture/Video messages (MMS) plans available through Rogers?
To get unlimited Picture/Video messages (MMS) upgrade to the new iPhone Value Packs. To learn more go to www.rogers.com/valuepacks

How to use Picture/Video messages (MMS)?
To learn how to send Picture/Video messages (MMS) once you’ve upgraded to the new 3.0 software go to http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-3...ges.html#video

Oh... btw, the developer release of iPhone OS 3.0 that was given out at the WWDC is now being shared on some of the bittorrent sites out there.

It's the final version (same as what's coming out on Wednesday), and works even without an activated ADC account.

The update is wednesday??? Sweet, I got it confused with when the new phone came out and thought it was the 19th!!

I think I might upgrade to that first value pack. extra 5 bucks to get MMS seems decent and to go to unlimeted text. Not that I come close to the 2500 i have now

If you want to go off contract, or you don't qualify for an upgrade but wish to anyway, you will need to pay 3 arms, 2 legs, your first born and your soul....

A quick question about tethering: I currently am using Shaw internet at home with a wireless router so that my Wii can connect to the internet. Once tethering becomes available I understand I'll be able to use the 3G connection from my phone to connect my computer to the internet. Is there any way I'll be able to use the 3G connection for the Wii as well? Essentially I would like to ditch Shaw entirely and just use my phone for any internet access I need.

I seriously doubt you could do it directly. You could set up a computer as a router though, and share the connection that way. 3G really isn't meant to be used like that (I can't imagine it would be all that usable with more than one machine on it) but it might work.

If you're using a Mac, you should be able to create an AdHoc network in about 3 seconds and then just join it from your Wii.

You can do the same thing from a Windows box, but I can't remember what all the steps are.

(I'm not saying 100% it will work, but it makes sense theoretically.)

Wasn't that similar to the non contract price of the 3g? Perhaps I'm crazy. My cousin lost his and they said he had to wait until this July to get another one or he'd have to pay $700.

I want a subsidized upgrade, but truthfully I'm struggling with the idea that I deserve one. Perhaps I don't fully understand what a subsidy is? The way I understand it, Rogers pays apple the full cost of the phone and then sells it to the consumer for more than half that with the assumption that you'll gradually pay off the difference over a 3 year contract. That would make 2 subsidized phones in 2 years a problem for Rogers wouldn't it? Wouldn't the obvious solution to the problem be to tack on another 3 years to the contract (making it a 5 year beast). Wouldn't that work for Rogers?

I'm only asking because I've been following this whole thing like a hawk. The amount of anger and resentment is pretty strong from some people. Through it all I'm having a hard time picking a side.

^^You pretty much got it. I hate telcos as much as anyone but these things do cost money and you have to pay for it somehow.

There's plenty of things they do to screw consumers worth complaining about.
