Man that sucks. I have 6 gigs per month of data, of which I've never used more than 5%, and I would have to buy something else for tethering to work? Why can't I just apply my remaining 95% to it?
I guess you have to look at the bright side ... at least we aren't stuck with AT&T.

How did you do that? I can't find anything in settings (where I assume the setup would be)

When the 2.1 software came out they put in a feature that enables multiple alerts when you get a single text message. It would always make me think I had another new message, but really was just the same message with another alert.
They took out the autocorrect that made lol into LOL.

Yeah, you need a file on the iPhone that enables certain carrier-specific settings. iTunes 8.1 allowed you to manually put this file on your iPhone which is how the tethering was discovered on the beta in the first place, but it's disabled now.
Is there a way to do it on the newest beta?

Haha I tried calling Rogers to enable the tethering, her first and only question was "how did you get that?", to which I replied 'i'm smarter than the average bear'. She was unimpressed, but said that can enable it for the rest of the year beginning on the 17th.

Anyone know if we are going to be able to pre-order the phone? Any general consensus on which ones is better, Rogers or Fido?
Merci!

Holy crap ... I've managed to get myself confused. I'm trying to follow the Rogers guy on Twitter for info (since he's the only one giving it out). This is my abridged timeline of his comments:
Yesterday:
- iPhone customers who want to know if they qualify for an upgrade should check the Rogers site
- If you qualify for an upgrade prices will be the standard $199/$299
Today:
- Most iPhone customers won't qualify for 2 years
- If you qualify for an upgrade it could cost $135 on top of the $199/$299
I'm not actually freaking out about this, I'd just like clarification. So when he says it could cost $135 I wonder if he's saying it could be less or it could be more?
Man, $350 for a 16 gig iphone. I'll pay it but it'll be a rough pill to swallow. I'm just such a heavy user and the upgrades are so appealing to me.

I'm more worried about the tethering than anything else. I can live with my 3G without needing to upgrade, but I needs my tethering!

Here's my current very important question. If i upgrade to the 3gs will I have to return my 3g to rogers? Long story short, my company bought my 3g for me, so if I buy the 3gs myself and have to return the 3g to rogers, I may run into a problem if I decide to quit and my boss says "so we'll be needing your iphone since we paid for it".

You own it (or your company does), so it's not a problem.
There's also going to be a market for used iPhone 3G phones here in the next little bit, which might make the price of upgrading not that bad.
Rogers has changed their 'qualifying rules' about 4 times since news of all this starting leaking. Honestly, for how large and successful they are, they are truly a terribly disorganized company.

No kidding. What, did they just find out about the new phones and tethering yesterday?

Question re: iPhones and how they connect to home networks. If you have windows home server running at home, any issues with getting an iPhone to connect to and browse the files on it? Any kind of remote desktop connection in it?

Haven't you seen the commercials?
"There's an app for that."
Depends what you want to do. There's a bunch of RDP apps. Have a look at post 320 or so in this thread.

I don't get this.
I have an iphone and want to buy a new one, but I can't? At any price? Seems wierd (not arguing, just commenting)
Maybe I'll just take a hammer to mine if i want a new one bad enough.

I think what they mean by not qualifying is you don't qualify for the subsidized price. You can still but the new phone, but it'll be like $700 or something, instead of the $199-$299 price if you qualify for the upgrade.

This would make more sense. When I called I was told not at any price. Maybe I just got a bonehead.
