When someone is brought in to sing the anthem at a significant national event (team Canada or Olympics) or a national ceremony they should respect the anthem. If someone wants to politicize the anthem for a specific purpose I can give them some leeway if they are doing it for their own audience like at a concert they are hosting. From what I understand about Hendrix, he did it for his paying audience and he can make whatever political statement he wants in that situation.

I am so sure I will make you a person who is wrong leaves the board bet. McDavid is not staying in Edmonton. Draisaitl knows, that's why when he signed his deal when asked about McDavid's next deal he said "Connor has to do what's best for Connor"

Lol this is great. Found a retrospective on that anthem performance. Apparently he went on before Dionne Warwick???
https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports...later-1729929/
Quote:
Park was sent the music to “O Canada.” But after he and Dionne Warwick were introduced to the small crowd of 12,213 on a 104-degree July night, Park said the producer made a slashing motion with his finger: There was no music. Park would have to sing “O Canada” a capella.
“I knew I was in trouble,” he said. “I needed the music to guide me.
“I got the first note out and it (echoed) right back in my ears, and then it was ‘O Christmas Tree.’ I was winging it. Usually you forget (the melody) and eventually you get back into it. But I never got back into it. I thought I’m just gonna give a big note at the end and get out of there.”
Two days later he was headed for Los Angeles to do interviews with Canadian television. The Mea Culpa tour had begun.
|
Apparently he ended up marrying a woman in Shanghai whose previous partner had recognized him in a restaurant from his anthem performance.
Quote:
Years later, after turning a gig at the Seoul Olympics into a successful career as a performer and producer in Asia, Park and a female friend went out to dinner in Shanghai, where they were joined by a Chinese couple.
“The guy kept staring at me and would avert his eyes,” Park recalled. “Finally he said, ‘Excuse me, can I ask a question? You anthem man?’”
The man said his father had worked in Toronto.
A couple of nights later, Park called the couple to ask if they would show him more of Shanghai. They weren’t a couple any longer. The woman, an executive at an advertising firm, agreed to show the American singer from Las Vegas the sights of Shanghai.
Today, affable Dennis Park and Xu Heng are husband and wife.

Here is the conversation...when i read it. I get the sense that both guys have agreed (as much as they can) to stay together in Edmonton, particularly McDavids quip.
Quote:
“These conversations are going to come up, but at the end of the day, he’s going to do what’s best for him,” Draisaitl said. “I did what I thought was best for me at the time. And we’ve got a lot of great people in our organization that are really smart hockey people that will put a team around us that can compete for the Stanley Cup for many years to come. And we have to make sure that we continue to push the pace and lead the right way.”
There’s no doubt having Draisaitl in the fold for eight years beyond this upcoming season will be a huge influence on McDavid, though.
“A lot of things go into deciding where you’re gonna play and how long you’re gonna play there,” McDavid said. “But Leon signing his big deal would certainly, knowing that he’ll be there, go into that decision, amongst many other things.”

Will be interesting to follow....certainly possible that if the Oilers bomb in the playoffs, he might really consider changes. No one can offer him more overall money though when that 8th year gets added on.

Lol two days later people are still replying. Looks like paper thin was all it took.
He was castrated in the off topic forum anyways, as any one would predict. Wasn't "hard" enough, I guess.

I'm not sure Draistsil stayed because of some promise from McDavid.
They put $14 x 8 in front of him, and he knew he wasn't getting $16 x 7 from another team so he took the contract.
I think if he knew the cap was going up so much he might have waited since he could maybe have gotten $15 x 7 from somewhere.
But might as well take the guaranteed $112M and not risk it.
It will probably be the same with McDavid. I think they might move Bouchard in the offseason as an RFA and will offer McDavid something like $144 x 8.
That's the equivalent of 20.5 x 7 which is going to be tough for any team to beat.

It isn't all about money sometimes. It's about family and childhood dreams. It's about bringing the biggest hockey market in the league it's first Cup in over 50 years. McDavid can still get paid well and go chase his hockey dream too.
