Universal Ostrich Farms claims to operate as a facility dedicated to studying the “robust” immune systems of ostriches.

According to its website, the company ceased production of ostrich meat in 2020, shifting its focus to a research-driven approach. The farm claims that the CFIA is working against its research interests.

“The farmers believe their farm has the potential to provide critical insights into managing and controlling diseases in wild populations, such as migratory ducks and other wildlife species,” the website states.

Uh, ok this is new info to me, and explains a lot. So much. And adds so many questions. Can just anyone do animal research? Do you need a license? Do they have one? If they are so special why did 69 of them die?

Quote:
The situation began on December 10, 2024, when a three-year-old ostrich showed pneumonia-like symptoms. Although it recovered, some younger ostriches and those introduced to the farm after 2020 also became ill, resulting in 69 deaths out of 468 ostriches, or 15% of the original herd, over 36 days.

The farmers observed that ostriches previously exposed to a bacterial infection in 2020 showed no new symptoms or deaths, suggesting they had achieved herd immunity. Despite the losses, the remaining ostriches fully recovered, and as of January 15, 2025, no further illnesses or deaths have occurred.

How would a bacterial infection provide immunity to H5N1?

The above is why it's important to test the birds. If the farm is footing the bill and it can help scientists learn more about possibly stopping Avian Flu from spreading or eradicating it all together that is worth it.

You really like making exceptions for reasons, eh? You know what also helps avian flu from spreading? Culling the motherclucking infected flock the minute you find out. The fact you can't recognize this tells me all I need to know about your reasoning abilities on this one.

Why are you so willing to give scowflaws what they demand? They are literal Karens upset at the decisions of management, and you want to spend your days defending them. These people should be shamed and ridiculed(and fined), not given money or support.

I'm afraid that the "research" they are conducting would likely have little scientific value since it is not being conducted in a controlled environment under controlled conditions by trained researchers.

Believe it or not, but PHAC, CFIA and soon VIDO, have specially designed facilities (CSCHAH) to conduct research like this under stringently controlled conditions. This ensures that data are gathered using scientifically sound and reproducible methodologies and that the conclusions are publishable in legitimate academic journals.

This is taking "I've done my own research" to the absurd.

I also believe the ostriches should be studied for immunity, like all research animals this involves them being killed though, I'm not sure what lab you hang out in but round my way 'research animals' dont live long and happy lives

Well first of all you have zero facts to back up saying that the rest of the flock is infected. Second, what you are saying about not having them tested because I am right and scientists who want them tested to help curb future problems are wrong sounds like a toddlers temper tantrum. My God, if I didn't know any better I would swear I was arguing this with Donald Trump. Stomp your feet and cry some more.

That's fantastic, because I didn't say that. Work on your reading comprehension before flailing around like a leper.

Sorry you've been unable to come up with one rational reason a freelance bird "research" farm who broke the law should be permitted special treatment, but that doesn't make me Donald Trump.

I didn't say they should be afforded special treatment. I have already said they should face punishment. I am saying scientifically it's better to let them test the birds and see what the results show but you are too off the tilt with wanting to be right. Fn chill out. Go touch grass.

They shouldn’t be allowed to do anything with the birds. You have agreed they failed in their basic duties to follow laws around bird flu. Why do you want them anywhere near anything in regards to these ostriches?

We know the farm owners aren’t responsible or competent. How can you support them.

Sure, but that’s “research”. They are clearly doing “their own research”, which is a magical term of its own that allows the person who casts it to state any claim they like as a scientific fact.

It’s always the most unassuming threads where it comes out. I still occasionally go back and re read parts of the pizza poll thread.

Spoiler!

I don't. I support testing the birds. Take the birds away from them, I don't care about them. They were shady about this whole thing.

So now who’s paying for the birds to be tested as the fundraising being done is for the farm.

The people paying for it want to save the birds, they don't give a lick about the owners.

“I screamed, ‘Get out! Get out!’ and he poured gas all over me,” she said.
As she started to move toward him, Wood says the intruder threw gas on her face and her clothes. She grabbed his arm and sunk her teeth into the exposed flesh where his sleeves were rolled up.

“This is primal. This is survival. And I got his upper arm as hard as I could,” she said. “I was just thinking, ‘Harder, harder, how hard can I bite him?’”

Good for her, these idiots all need a good nut shot.

These people are absolutely insane. Imagine saddling up to their side of the argument? Man, you'd have to be a real clown shoes wearing moron to take that position.
