Could it be worse than what happened in Russia? The amount Russia paid to build the facilities was staggering, and it sounded like most of it went into the pockets of chronies. I guess in Russia, the mafia is the government.
What could Thompson have done to make this a personal issue? Does he have some sort of past grievances?
I could be wrong but I recall Friedman saying something along the lines of him not being on the 4 nations roster was because the coaching staff didn't think he'd handle being a backup very well, which if true, is total malarkey IMO.

Cassidy and Deboer are the assistant coaches and they are in Vegas with Thompson and allegedly they thought he didn’t take kindly to being a back up. So they left him off 4 nations.
Good that he didn’t want to sit. No goalie should! They want to start, that’s the point.

Yeah, also it's such a short tournament. It's not like he's sitting out 50+ games in an entire season. Ironically enough, if there's any goalie who'd make a stink about that I'd put my money on Binnington lol.

You’re also always bringing 3 starters who wouldn’t normally want to be backup either. The whole thing is ridiculous, and Thompson is really highlighting yet another toxic side of Hockey Canada.
Everyone is talking about Bedard and Celebrini and their on ice performance. But do any of us truly know if one of them ever “down low, too slow”’d someone from hockey canada?? That’ll be the deciding factor.

Yeah, it seems like there are always stories like this just before the Olympics.
I think they should move on from having these big all-in-one mega events in one city or region. Let different cities around the world host different types of events and show that they already have facilities available before bidding. Make it a truly global event. If you're a multi-event athlete, then pick your spot.
That's just what every sport's regular schedule already is.
The thing that makes the Olympics interesting and unique is that everything is held in a single location at the same time.

I'm concerned about the size of the playing surface. It seems to me that with hockey being a "game of inches" a few less feet of room could lead to injuries from players not expecting the boards to be where they are etc.
Like it's one thing when you go from NHL to International, since that's more space to work with... but less space is a different story. Although, I suppose international teams deal with it ok when they come over here to play events on NHL rinks, so maybe it's a non-issue.

They should make International Ice more of an Oval...that would really complicate board-play...

I can't see it being a significant issue.
The rink will be slightly wider than an NHL rink, but shorter by about 3 feet. The difference from 200 feet to 196.85 feet is about 1.6%, which will most-likely be made up by slightly reducing the size of the neutral zone. The size of the offensive/defensive zone should be the same (which is how these differences are usually accounted for).
Watching on tv, it won't even be noticeable.
No player is going to be thinking, "I know my team's goal line is 185 feet behind me, so I should be 4 feet away from the end boards", only to look up and discover they're only 1 foot away from the boards.
It might result in more offside calls because the neutral zone will be reduced by 3 feet, but I doubt most players' spatial awareness is that finely tuned. They'll just look for the blue line.

Some NHL rinks use to be non-standard size. Boston Garden, Chicago Stadium, Stampede Corral. It still happens often in NCAA hockey rinks. Friedman talked about it on some podcast, and said he'd like NHL rinks to be less cookie cutter to create a real home ice advantage. I like that idea. There could be a minimum and maximum size, and rinks could be designed to fall within those parameters
