This was in the middle of the playoffs.. and some of us are fretting over Joel Hanley? The soon to be 34 year old waiver pick up.

Weeger will be just fine without Hanley. Let's not to the Flames think and overthink stuff and think we have a better grip on the situation with our overcaution.

Play the kid.
I would think if anyone was coming out it would be Bean.

2b. Bean - Weegar actually has a better expected goal percentage at 58.7% than Hanley - Weegar at 56.5%. This could indicate that Weegar benefits more from playing with a more mobile partner.
3. A team won't be winning any playoff rounds with Hanley as its #4D.
4. This is a team that struggles to score goals, and Parekh is potentially a force multiplier offensively. A coach would want him over the boards in situations when this team is trailing.
EDIT: 5. The pairings are not written in stone, and can change mid game if Parekh is struggling in a top 4 role.

I have nothing against Hanley, and I respect the guy for all the hard work and cementing the Flames' top 4. I just don't see his spot as untouchable in this playoffs push.
I'm not calling him untouchable, nor am I suggesting he be signed, or kept as a top four defenseman.

I'm just saying there is very little logic in changing the team's top four in a do or die handful of games with the playoffs on the line.

Not sure how anyone would argue otherwise.

Sure, anyone. Let's not worry about Joel Hanley, Jake Bean or any other marginal player for what we think is a potential star.

Because there's a potentially a much better player who can play. Cale Makar debuted in the middle of the 1st round and took out a 2nd year player who had played every game up until that point. This all isn't as complicated as Flames fans think it is. Play the kid.

I'm also in the camp that wants to see Parekh/Weegar as a pair. I think once he's adjusted to the NHL (hopefully as soon as next season), that could be a dominant offensive pairing.

It just makes too much sense putting your best two D-men together and giving us a truly elite pair.

Also Weegar is signed for a long-time, might as well find out early if there's chemistry there and if there is.. we have a top pair solidified for the forseeable future.

These conversations kind of remind me a bit of the Gaudreau/Tkachuk discussions about putting them on different lines to spread out the offence, but it wasn't until we saw them together with Lindholm and loaded up one line that the team really looked dangerous. It's not apples to apples, of course.

Also should probably mention I'm talking next season, maybe see them in camp and go from there. I doubt it happens this year but wouldn't be dissapointed to see it tried if we're out of it.

Tkachuk-Lindholm-Gaudreau was put together to end that awful covid season, and after all 3 had down years they lit it up to end the season. The Flames eliminated at the time, but still they showed the chemistry.

Coming into camp they got split up, but quickly put back together when they realized Coleman wasn't a 1st line player.

We can't discount if they show chemistry down the stretch here. Gives an early look for camp, even if the games are meaningless. I remember Jankowski having a great game vs Vegas to end the year and Gulutzan throwing water on it. Garbage stuff.

Is there such a thing as a grizzled veteran with that particular skill?

I think you start Parekh on the bottom pair, and you probably pair him with the best defensive defencemen you have outside of the top 4, who is also willing to drop the gloves. Shelter the pairing. Let him adjust to the speed of the game and the system. His play will tell you how ready or not he is for moving up the lineup.

Aside from Pachal's handedness, he is the perfect partner for Parekh in my mind for Parekh's first game. Then you take it game-by-game (or at least shift-by-shift) and move him up and down the lineup as warranted. I just wouldn't pencil him anywhere in the top 4 for now. Let Parekh tell you what he is ready for as each shift unfolds.

After the number of pube bets over the years on CP, there must be.

I argue otherwise. The odds of playoffs are sub-10% and the odds of a cup are 0.1%. Parekh might improve those odds or make them worse - it's unknown. The downside is that maybe the odds of playoffs goes from 10% to 0% if he commits a bunch of errors. The upside is that odds of playoffs goes from 10% to 30% if he is a game changer on the PP and transition game, and they run the table with him in the lineup

So you might increase the odds and it will help his development to play meaningful hockey. Thats enough for me.

I think you give Parekh a week to practice with the team and then throw him in regardless of whether the playoffs are still a possibility.

He really didn’t look great at camp to start the year. It would be a different story if he was on the brink of making the team to start the year, or had played a handful of games and was a known quantity in the NHL.

I do believe he will become a great player for the team, but his last NHL tryout didn’t blue my socks off

The organization will likely bring in assorted prospects and farmhands as black aces (contingent on playoffs of course). A good chance of them to work with the development coaches on things like skating, etc.

There is a pick your poison element here.
19-20 yr old D men in the nhl are very rare and tend to struggle.
The flip side is another year not learning pro habits won’t help him either.

There’s no easy answer. We have to trust the people who know the young man will make the right call and in 3-4 years we’ll see.
