Don’t panic, I don’t believe for a second that Calgary had any intention to actually trade for him and use him for a roster spot. They’re looking to get younger long term.
|
Well to be fair, you did say that talks didn't get very far because Jones didn't want to come to Calgary. I think that made a lot of people (myself included) think that they wanted him to come here and play, rather than just be a landing spot to retain salary or something else.

Well that seems like a lot for a post-apex player, but I guess Florida is throwing everything in?

It's fine for them now, but their plan has to include a trade for a prospect or currently backup young goalie this summer, otherwise they're in trouble as soon as next season.

And tons of draft picks coming up over the next two years, with 4 firsts and 5 seconds. Plus their pick this year will be very high.

I would not worry too much about Chicago, they have been one of the worst teams in the NHL for 8 years and will continue to be one of the worst for years to come. If Bérard was smart he would sign a 3 year deal like Tkachuk and get the #### out of there as soon as possible.
Incredibly poorly run franchise with no reason to expect it to improve any time soon:

Puckpedia says the Panthers put Tkachuk on LTIR and called up Driedger, and currently have a 21-player roster.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say in a years time this trade will look very, very, very good for Florida.
If it doesn't I hope no one remembers I said this

A little late but just looked at the details for this. Florida obviously gave up a lot but 5 years of retention is very very rare for a player who is still productive.
Makes me wonder if Kadri couldn't get a haul if Calgary did something similar. A first and an NHL ready prospect would be exciting.

He might be - he might not.
It’s tough to think of a goalie in recent memory whose development has been handled more carelessly than Spencer Knight.

I said it sarcastically because someone earlier in this thread said it...Its one game but the guy is a really good young goalie IMO.

Pardon? What are you referring to?
He was a can't miss prospect who dominated at the World Juniors and at Boston College for 2 years. He was immediately good enough to play NHL games pretty soon after his draft. Had 32 games and a .908 save percentage at 20 years old...in the NHL. After a slight drop in play the next year and then had a severe setback in his mental health that cause him to miss some time for treatment. Had something to do with OCD/perfectionism. The team used the NHL assistance program to get him treatment, and then he spent a year in the minors getting his physical and mental game in line. He's back full time this year and looks just as good as he ever did. He was back on track to becoming a franchise goalie. He's still only 23.
What was the problem with "how he was handled"?
If I'm Chicago I'm over the moon with dumping an albatross contract in Jones, and getting back both a franchise goalie and a 1st round pick. It's a pretty amazing trade from their perspective. Could significantly alter their franchise trajectory.

Chicago 2-0 since they traded Jones, outscoring opposition 11-4.
They are .500 in 15 games when Jones does not play.

Playing four games at 19 and 32 games at 20 was rushing him IMO. There was outside issues obviously and the four games was after College ended but at 20 he should have spent the vast majority of time in the AHL.

Knight is a great prospect and Chicago may very well end up with the best player in the deal when it's all said and done. It just makes sense from the Panthers POV given their situation, Knight was a 4.5 million backup who does nothing in the playoffs and was the only fat they could trim off their roster without having an impact on rest of the team. Jones fills a hole that was created when Montour left. At 7M, if he can be a solid second pairing guy for the next five years, it's a good deal for the Panthers.

Correct.
Knight was included for Florida to make the cap work. They didn't want to give up on him, but it was either him or the trade does not get done.
The Panthers are clearly in win now mode.
Jones will be better playing for the Panthers. How much better is the guess.
For Chicago, they save $7M in cap, get a potential franchise goalie and a first round pick. They have a ton of defensive prospects. Jones was not helping them.
Trades don't need to be won by one team. Both can win.

Yeah I see this the same, both teams should come out on top. I have some concerns about Jones' compete level but he will be asked to do a lot less in Florida. Will be interesting to follow this deal going forward.
I always thought Knight was a star in the making. But goalies are so hard to predict, only time will tell.

Maybe it's the modern day version of the Brett Hull for Ramage and Wamsley trade.

That may be a great comp. No way Calgary regrets that trade.
