Loved the focus on skill; seemed to be a recurring theme in the interviews. It maybe tailed off towards the end of the draft but great to see we focused on that early. While ultimately meaningless, it's still nice to see people who specialize in the draft for media, etc. comment on how well we did.

Okay here is one thing I liked.
Actually using a high 2nd round pick on a non goalie!
There has been only 3 times since 2003, the Flames had a top 10 pick in the 2nd round.
2014 took Mason McDonald
2016 traded the pick for Brian Elliot. Blues took Kyrou
2024- Basha
Goalies are so unsexy in early round picks unless they are generational talents.
Using a high 2nd for once on a forward for once, thank Jeebus!

Time will tell, but it it feels like a really good draft by Conroy and the scouting crew.
Getting Parekh with the 9th OA is unreal. Basha and Misa were both potential late 1sts...grabbing them in later rounds is also really good. Laing and Hoskins are questionable, but everyone else seems like solid picks.
Nice to see the Flames back to prioritizing skill and hockey sense over pure size.

They got the better prospect for taking cap dump Kuzmenko.
That turned out pretty good.

The flames org chart is massively devoid of centers. Surprised the didn’t take one with on of the first 3 picks.
We had too many goalies but sorted that out. Now we have too many D. Not sure where they are going to put them all.
I’m thinking free agency is going to answer a lot of questions. Feels like some more shoes are going to drop. We have too much cap space for them not to.

Re:Misa, when you draft a guy in the 5th round, it’s impossible to say he was a potential 1st. Even the flames passed him over multiple times before selecting him.

If it wasn't Parekh, it would have been Catton, Iginla, Buium, etc. That was a no-brainer pick.
Only picks I didn't get were Gridin and Hoskin.

I think the Flames did really well here today. The prospects selected seem to have high-upside. Time will tell if they become NHLer's, and if so, what their impact will be, but for today, it is hard not to feel good about it overall.
Fallers and risers are always tricky. This is an 18 year old draft, not a 22 year old draft. There is just a much higher degree of uncertainty. I think it is probably more interesting to figure out why some of the prospects were taken ahead of where they were ranked, and why some were taken after. Then wait and see if the answers hold up.
I graded the draft an A. The only disappointment (outside of not drafting Tij), was Conroy not making a move to acquire a bad cap hit with sweeteners, but I am sure that this is coming soon. Calgary really has to weaponize this cap space. There are franchise players to be found throughout the draft, as well as high-end support players. Yes, rare, but the more bullets, the better. It also allows Calgary to move up in the drafts better when you have a deep prospect base. Calgary is very deep now on defence and in net. Just need to build the forwards now (especially centres) starting next draft.
This was excellent.

He might have fallen a lot, but the pre-draft rankings from multiple sites had him in the same range as Basha as a potential late first or early second rounder.
FC had him as high as 17th and Dobber had him as high as 21st.

Easy A
But I only wish we could have found a way to snag Poirier, I have a feeling Carolina found gold with that kid at 156.

I just ran a few of the draft simulators, using different lists (Button, Mckenzie, FC Hockey, Draft Pros, Consensus), and tried to make the picks the Flames took today at each draft slot we had. Only ones I was able to consistently get were Gridin and Battaglia. Mews, Misa, and Basha were all taken in most of them in 1st and early 2nd rounds. I think that shows the value in the picks we took today.

I’m going to super Parekh now, but Buium instead of Parekh and this would’ve been A+ for me.
Hoping Parekh gains 10 lbs off muscle this off-season.

Like others have said, love the direction. Drafting skill, drafting for high end players, less cautious. This is a significantly different approach and I am pleased. A question for the group is why the change? Is it simply bcs we are in rebuilding mode now and there is greater urgency for high-end players? Is it a change in management philosophy regarding safe picks? Or is it just the result of having an abundance of picks and as a result not being as afraid to fail on a given pick. Maybe a combination?

A was my vote. We went with what was given to us. Didn’t get a top end center but that’s because they weren’t really available in the first round. Happy to get Parekh once Iggy and Catton were taken.
2025 will help us grab our future center.

Another cool way to look at the draft
From: Sandman's Prospect Tiers/Shelves
1) Celebrini
2) Demidov
3) Levshunov/ Dickinson/ Buium
4) Iginla/ Parekh/ Silayev
5) Sennecke/ Catton/ Yakemchuk/ Lindstrom
6) Helenius/ Eiserman
7) Hage/ Chernyshov/ Greentree
8) Ritchie/ Brandsegg-Nygard/ Connelly/ Surin/ Jiricek
9) Hemming/Solberg
10) Luchanko/ Parascak/Freij
11) Petterson/ Boisvert/ Hutson/ Mews
12) Artamonov/ Vanacker/ Emery/ Gridin/ Kiviharju/ Wellenius/ Beaudoin/ Howe/ Letourneau/ Basha/ Masse
13) Franson/ Badinka/ O'Reilly/ Pulkkinen/ Elick/ Miettinen
14) Misa/ Eriksson/ Marques/ Brunicke/ Fischer/ Gill
15) Poirier/ Stiga/ Jecho/ Ziemer/ Danford/ Zether/ Boilard/ Bednarik/ Roberts/ Vaisanen/ Marrelli
16) Skahan/ Smith/ Battaglia/ Fernstrom/ Mustard/ Humphreys/ Plante/ Ustinkov
17) Burrows/ Kleber/ Muggli/ Vinni/ Zellers/ Nabokov
18) Pikkarainen/ Saarinen/ Spellacy/ Pitner/ Josephson/ Eliasson/ Shuravin/ Kos
19) Mateiko/ Muhonen/ Fibigr/ Soini/ Caswell
20) George/ Koivu/ Leenders/ Cristoforo
21) Villeneuve/ Zetterberg/ Wetsch/ Lavoie
+ Zarulin, Upside's 4th ranked goalie.
+ Eric Jamieson was Upside's 5th ranked overager and 115th ranked overall
Hearing more on the couple more unknown lads and the purposeful drafting of them, hard to give anything less than a Grade A for our draft class.

Defencemen take longer to develop
Definitely draft those first
Next year we will be bottom 6 and have first crack in each round to take our centers.
You don’t want your forwards developing out of their entry level contracts into pricey players before your defenceman are done developing

Like I said to Diss. The Flames are using all the picks to make selections. No picks are being traded for players today.
