Yeah, as bizaro86 said, it should be weighted though. Whoever they picked at 177 shouldn't impact your opinion of the draft much.

With that many picks in the first three rounds, three players shouldn't be out of reach.

It looks to me like the Flames got one virtually sure thing and about five good possibilities.

For sure. I’m expecting two and hoping for three

Actually pretty hopeful for the team after this draft. I love the selections and that they seem to be following plans, rather than reacting only.
I kind of love the defensive depth in the org they have now too.
I gave A, but only really because I was in on the Tij nostalgia angle.

Maybe take the ratio and divide by the number of the round where the player was picked? So a 1st-round pick would count 7 times as much in the weighting as a 7th.

Coup might be a strong word.

The Flames have gotten 4 players twice, and 3 players 4 times, since 2000 (using 100 NHL games as a counter). So 6 times in the last 25 years, or roughly one time in four.

Three is a very reasonable expectation for this group, and 4 wouldn't surprise me at all.

Also, with the Flames re####ing, there are more opportunities. I'm predicting 4!

Misa will probably be a 100 point player in the ohl next year. He's slender but his younger brother is thicker so maybe he has room to grow.

Watching the interviews, it sounds like all the OHL guys are good friends.

Sounds like they got the goaltender they targeted. Conroy said there was some pressure from the goaltending staff to take him higher.

0.991 using that method. A perfectly average draft given what they had.

Lots of ways to quibble with that though, the rankings and weightings primarily. And one "off the board" pick like the Hoskin one impacts it quite a bit.

Even sequencing; if you flip the Basha and Gridin picks it turns into 1.001. So, the identical draft class can yield different results if you value sequencing.

Average by what metric?

Is it better to reach up, or grab fallers?

It is far from clear what the best strategy should be

I maintain Hoskin is a weird pick, but great draft overall!

Really excited for next year. If we can snag misa and McQueen that would be a dream.

You will have to read what IamNotKenKing, bizaro86, and Jay Random mentioned. I just ran the numbers - not sure any of us are in love with the methodology.

I did, and that wasn't directed at you, it was directed at the concept.

As for your work, I think you did all you could with this idea.

It will be nice to hopefully have a prospect playing for Team Canada at the WJC in Parekh, and maybe a dark horse in Basha. Feels like we've had minimal Canadian representatives for many years.

To your point, it does reward taking fallers and punish reaching. I don't think anyone would categorically claim that is a good strategy.

I'm leaving an open mind on this and future drafts for the next few years. When the team is rebuilt and ready to make the playoffs, that's when it gets exciting again. Right now, just sit back and watch these prospects develop.
