I'd actually love to be proven wrong, as that's an annoying salary to have on the books, but I'm not seeing it happen. Best bet with Valimaki is to trade for another struggling prospect with a $1-$1.5mil salary.
You're underrating cap space relative to recent success or lack-thereof of a prospect.

Most people probably haven't seen much of him. He had that bit of a resurgence in Europe a couple years ago, but since then... yeah I'd say he's significantly less NHL-worthy now than 2 or 3 years ago. He's slower and his confidence seems shot.

He'll get picked up by a team that's poised to take a run at Bedard.

Valimaki will be free again every year. Probably can pick him up for minimum cap next year. Why waste money on him now. Dude is not an NHL dman. It would take a miracle for him to be one this year

Valimaki always reminded me of Gio. Maybe he's taking the Gio path to the NHL

How will he un-draft himself?

Well, I meant he could go to Europe for a bit to find his game

Vali has $2M salary this year. Probably a bigger issue than his cap hit.

Nope - I believe it's now 12 MST. Eastern folks didn't want to work over their lunch hours.

And Moscow isn’t exactly a great destination right now.

There’s maybe 3 teams who don’t care about cap space or winning this year that that would have the patience to make a project out of Valimaki and work with him while he is on the main roster. Like you I think it’s highly unlikely it happens. We’ve seen with Monahan how valuable cap space is to teams like that, so using it on a waiver pickup seems like a waste.

Valimaki's draft year isn't *that* far back in hockey terms, and there will be scouts in teams' war rooms that still vouch for his potential. I think a team's ability to eat the cap space in the short term and help develop him is the deciding factor in claiming him or not.

No one is going to pick up Valimaki. I think he is probably done with the Flames though. I bet he’ll be traded at some point. Or not renewed after this season.
I believe we’re going to have one more set of players on waivers when/if Kylington comes back. That will be the tricky one.
The Zohorna pickup is a puzzling one. Claim a guy. Then a few days later put him on waivers. Why bother. Probably the only move I found puzzling this offseason.

Because he could easily go unclaimed.

I believe in the Jays.

Hmmm.... both Vilardi and Anderson-Dolan in LA are waivers eligible this year yes?

Sutter clearly didn't see a fit.
I'd much prefer a quick decision like that and waive him instead of protecting him and exposing someone else.

I am curious who will be waived today around the NHL since it's the last day before rosters need to be set. Fairly curious if our 3rd line winger will be on that list.

Yes. Though Vilardi may have played himself onto the team.

The other guy to watch is Kravtsov in NYR. Hasn't played well in the pre-season and guys he's competing with for a spot (like Kakko) have.
