Coulda used this at the deadline.. why did we wait so long.
I feel bad for Sean, he’s played through so many injuries he shouldn’t of had to and now his career is on a poor trajectory.
The kid was so good coming into the league.

I hope Monahan recovers. Not just for hockey but so that he can go day to day pain free.

Was really Rooting for Mony to catch in the playoffs. He’s given us a lot of great moments to celebrate. Hoping for the best for him, but I sadly agree with other posters, he may well be done.

It sounds like Monahan tried to fight through it and didn't say anything until recently. Treliving doesn't even know how long he's been playing hurt.

Very sad new about Monahan, but not surprising in the least. Hoping a good recovery for him so he can resume his career, whether it be as a Flame or elsewhere.
Love how BT stuck up for him. He's right to say a lot of criticism towards him is bull####. Nobody can EVER fault a player whose body gives out on them. IMO that is the one big no-no when it comes to criticizing a player. Call a player out for whining, mailing it in, putting forth a poor effort, or off-ice issues. SM is absolutely none of things and has been the perfect ambassador for the team since the day he arrived.
He's still young so I really hope he can play in the NHL again one day.

Good thing he played enough regular season games to get his name on the cup.

Monahan walking out on the ice to raise the cup with Jonny handing it off to him will be a future iconic Flames moment

Monahan has the mind of an NHL player in the body of a 50 year old. What will his quality of life be if he keeps playing after having so many surgeries before the age of 30? Maybe it's just best if he LTIRetires

Don't get me wrong, Monahan's all heart but at what point does the CBA allow for contract termination for nondisclosure of injuries? He's been a warrior for the Flames but players need to be forthcoming about injuries because they are not trained medical professionals. Teams employ medical staff to make these calls. A player should never come forward after months of struggle to say "yeah, I've been hiding an injury and now there's nothing we can do but have it end my season." I understand that players want to play but how do we make sure that players aren't hurting the team by refusing to accept the truth about their physical condition?

Feel the same way, a few weeks earlier would've been super helpful. Plus there is no reason for him to be out there if he's struggling with an injury, he's probably making it worse.

I don't think so. Torn hip labrums, sports hernias, wrist issues that required surgeries happen and need surgery whether you want them to or not. Playing through the pain only delayed things but wouldn't have changed the results.

Rough news for Monahan. Hope he does a full recovery. Poor guy just can’t catch a break.
Mackey recalled over Valimaki is interesting, though still expected. Happened the last go around too.

Feel bad for Monahan. Was really hoping he could turn it around for a playoff run.
He was interviewed before the last game and when asked about injuries said he felt great.

Yeah, I was thinking about Cheechoo compared to Monahan the other day.
I doubt Monahan had a diagnosis that he kept to himself. He was likely just sore and playing through it, to his detriment. Players play through pain that goes away all the time. Maybe he should have been more aware, but he’s a 20 something with a HS education. I bet the pain went away with rest and resurfaces quickly in games. He often got off to decent starts in games (like last game) and then tailed off.

Now think about what this team looks like with a healthy Monahan.

To be honest, with a healthy Monahan on the team next year, the team would look radically different…but probably not in a good way. I think they needed to move him and/or Lucic this off season to get the big names re-signed. Now that they can’t move him, I think this team will find it really difficult to find cap room to sign the big guys.
The team can be 110% of the cap I believe during the off-season. Tre stated that he was pretty confident that Monahan will be back for training camp so they’d need to get back down before the start of the season unless his recovery wasn’t going as expected - that is a big risk for the team to take.

Mony needs to hang them up. He’s a kid and he’s still got to be able to move around for another 50 years or so.

Might very well be a case of LTIRetirement.
