Of course powerful people influence policy. What else do you think being powerful means? And of course the rich influence policy: wealth is a form of power.
In a real oligarchy, the leaders make sure that nobody but themselves can acquire any wealth or power, thus making their own positions permanent. This describes Russia well enough, but does not describe the U.S. at all. Do you think Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos were born billionaires?
|
To be fair, I'm pretty sure most of the Russian billionaires were not born billionaires, especially in the USSR... They made their fortunes privatizing a lot of what was state owned and making it their own.
People can still get rich in Russia, even become billionaires, but it is more difficult in my opinion.

You realize that was in aid of a UN resolution right? That it involved no troops actually in Libya? That the only countries in opposition were dictatorships?

Moral equivalency is a game that is generally played by failing to realize the obvious.

The trucker convoy and the Ukraine invasion have really shown the intelligence level of certain people on all my social media platforms...including CP

Another personal anecdote. One of my legal assistants is Russian. She was in tears the entire day she heard of the invasion. Many Russians outside of Russia, left Russia for a reason. Many are strongly opposed to the way their country was heading and many were, themselves, victims of the authorities.
I don't really see how this is any different than putting all Japanese citizens into interment camps during WWII.

I agree they shouldn't be banned, unless they are supporting Putin. That being said not being allowed to play a kids game for millions of dollars is a long way from an internment camp.

Being denied your ability to earn millions of dollars is not an internment camp, but seems illogical for something out of their control. It's still pretty bad.

The issue isn't intelligence, it is epistemology.

Are there any restrictions that can be put in place that force the players to take their pay as deposits in North American banks so that they can't easily get the money back into the Russian banking system or would that be happening with Russian banks being out of SWIFT? I don't think denying Russians a place to work and earn money outside of Russia is a solution. If anything, encourage Individual Russians to break away as the best opportunity for themselves.
But by all means be extremely harsh about banning Russia from all International competition, and do it for a punitively long period of time.

It's not the first time, or the first discussion where I hear you say similar things. To me this comes across as: "I think I'm smart, and everyone who disagrees with me is stupid". A person can be intelligent and still believe in something you don't. You seem like an alright dude, but you can be over the top when you're trying to get your point across. I think your life would be a little easier if you don't look down at people that disagree with you.

There are certain things that aren't a matter of agreement or disagreement. Being duped into following a white supremecist or a dictator or wanna be dictator are two of those things...it's even worse if you understand what is happening and still follow these people.
To be fair I probably should have posted that in the freedumb covoy or Russia Ukraine thread.
I wasn't talking about banning Russian NHLers which wouldn't be fair unless they are openly supporting Putin. Did OV change his Twitter profile picture yet?
