They should invite this woman to announce the pick...

The Habs picked first OV in 71 (Lafleur of course) and again in 80
but since the Flames pulled into Calgary, the Habs are on of the other clubs that hasn't had a sniff at a 1OV, picked 3rd twice , and Price at 5 I believe

Hopefully Wright is a flop then.

Not having earned the first overall by being the worst team in the league.
Each of the last 4 times the Habs picked first overall, they either won the Cup that same year or the year prior. 2 were acquired in trades and 2 because of the first priority on Quebec players that the Habs had for a couple years early in the draft.
Also, the Flyers picked first overall in 1975 after winning their second-consecutive Cup. That was also acquired in a trade.

So in other words, the Habs have had 4 top 3 picks since 1980 and the Flames have had zero.

2 number 3s recently too, with Kotkaniemi and Galchenyuk.
Pretty sure they moved up big in the draft lottery to pick Galchenyuk.

sure. look I don't really like the Habs, but I guess they aren't one of the teams (like the one to the North hint hint) that goes back to the trough every few years.
42 years since their last number 1
two number 3s, and they have made Bennett like picks there
I'd be happy if most of the Canadian teams wallowed in misery forever, but they haven't had a franchise altering pick in a while (although they nailed Price at 5)
the Flames are in a league of their own (self inflicted and bad luck) to be sure

21 different franchises have drafted first since the Habs last did it
Edmonton and Colorado/QC 4
Ottawa , Buffalo, Pittsburgh , Tampa 3
Toronto, Jersey, Florida, Stars (while in Minnesota), Boston, Winnipeg (while in Atlanta) 2
amazing how you just look at those teams and can sort the roughly half of those franchises who totally rearranged their fortunes or were dominant as a result and the others who have done nothing
poor Arizona is /was actually due

If I were Arizona, I wouldn't be too cut up, think there's pretty clearly a top tier of guys here as opposed to a clear-cut 1/2.
It's the Bedard lottery I'd be pissed about not winning.

I think Slafkovsky is a shoe-in to go 2nd overall.

If a team other than NJ was at #2 I would disagree as i figure most teams would go for the centre with Cooley. But they seemed well set-up already in that position. So I agree Slafksovsky makes a ton of sense.

Worst team seems to win a lot with their 18% odds
