But I think the hype/projection of bedard is probably similar to both. I think Kane/MacKinnon were similarly hyped going into their drafts.

My opinion on the hype level of players drafted first overall since Ovechkin entered the league is:

Top tier (“generational” talent that was hyped for 3+ years before being drafted): Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid, Matthews

Second tier (highly touted a couple years before they were drafted as the player that will go #1 and is often considered better than most players in drafts before his draft year): MacKinnon, Kane, Tavares, Stamkos, Bedard

Third tier (consensus top pick early on in their draft year and stayed in that position when drafted first overall): Hall, Ekblad, Dahlin, Lafreniere, Hughes, Power, Wright

Fourth tier (no strong consensus on who should go #1 that year): Yakupov, Johnson, RNH, Hischier

Bedard was getting hype 2 years ago, which would plant him firmly in your top category. Add this current remarkable season (2ppg after the first 10 games.) at 16yo in the most offensively difficult junior league... I would say Bedard is verging on Matthews level hype. I personally think his skill set will endure better and carry his team further than McDavid will ever be capable of.

That is true. He could be considered in that top category as he has been highly touted for several years now… and has so far lived up to the hype at every level he has played. He is the most likely to be considered the next “generational” talent.

For Bedard to finish with those numbers after the disappointing start he had shows how truly special he is.

18 points (11 goals) in his first 22 games followed by

40 goals + 42 assists in 40 games.

Not to mention he's just next-level in terms of shot generation (5.25 shots per game).

Pure insanity.

Prior to World Juniors (shortened albeit), he was playing terribly. Something seemed to click with getting more national attention, and he ran away with it after. He's been a pleasure to watch since for sure.

As i said earlier, if the Pats are actually able to fill the cupboards and get players that are elite to play alongside him, as well as fill their roster to actually hold and win games, instead of being the glass house team they are, next year will be fun as hell, and Bedard has a chance to set new records.

Would Bedard be considered the first generational talent from the WHL?

All the names that come to mind (Gretzky, Lemiuex, Lindros, Ovechkin, Crosby etc) were from the OHL, QMJHL or Europe

Mike Modano? I'm not sure he was hyped as a generational talent

I think Sakic is the greatest WHLer of all time but also doesn't meet the generational bar. I would say the same of Scott Niedermayer.

There's a bunch really: Sakic, Niedermayer, Clarke, Neely, Modano, Lanny. Probably missing some.
I don't think any reach the generational mark.

Sweden takes gold in the U18 Tournament, stunning team USA who settles for Silver. Finland takes bronze over Czechia. Canada loses out in the quarterfinals 6-5 to the Finns, on the strength of Joakim Kemell's hat-trick-including the game-winning OT goal. Jonathan Lekkerimaki led the tournament with 15 points in 6 games, boosting his stock for this years draft. Here's the top 10:

1)Jonathan Lekkerimaki, F (SWE)6gp/5g/10a/15pts,+4, 4 PIM.

2)Matthias Havelid, D (SWE) 6gp/4g/8a/12pts,+4, 0 PIM.

3)Jiri Kulich, F (CZE) 6gp/9g/2a/11pts,-6, 2 PIM.

4)Isaac Howard, F (USA) 6gp/6g/5a/11pts,+8, 2 PIM.

5)Noah Ostlund, F (SWE) 6gp/4g/6a/10pts,+3, 6 PIM.

6)Logan Cooley, F (USA) 6gp/3g/7a/10pts,+5, 4 PIM.

7)Rutger McGroarty, F (USA) 6gp/8g/1a/9pts,+8, 27 PIM.

8)Cutter Gauthier, F (USA) 6gp/3g/6a/9pts,+3, 6 PIM.

9)Frank Nazar, F (USA) 6gp/3g/6a/9pts,+7, 4 PIM.

10)Liam Ohgren, F (SWE) 6gp/3g/6a/9pts,+4, 2 PIM.

Kemell finishes with 5gp/6g/2a/8pts. Plenty of US prospects upping their stock for this year's draft-namely McGroarty and Gauthier. Canada had a rather non-descript squad this year, but Bedard still finishes with 4gp/6g/1a/7pts.

I'll do a little write-up of my thoughts on some players when I get time.

Trottier would be up there. Does Messier count, mostly AJHL but a quick stint in Portland.

Montreal is the best choice out of NJ (who already had #1 picks) and Arizona (Western Conference rival)
