McDavid is the best player in this league, and he is exciting to watch. It is annoying for Flames' fans in particular, which sucks. That's always going to suck, but it is what it is. I grew up in the Gretzky era, and it was not even close to being this 'unbearable' because media was not the animal it is today, and social media wasn't even a thing. Now if you are a hockey fan, you are inundated with McDavid stuff. However, that's fine. It is annoying, but there isn't much of an issue there. Like I said, he is the best player in the NHL right now (and I hate to say it) even if he isn't the most complete player. They way he plays is also 'exciting' to watch. The media coverage is deserved.
What is not deserved is us Calgary fans being buried beneath this wave of coverage during Calgary Flames games. The consistent 'gushing' over him is maddening at times. Warranted? Sure, but at the same time people need to know their audience and appreciate them a little bit too. Talk about McDavid, but please don't CONTINUALLY gush over him all through the game. McDavid deserves his accolades that he is getting right now, and like it or not, we are seeing the best player of this generation developing in front of us. I can appreciate that as a hockey fan, and I have lived that experience as a Flames' fan during the Gretzky era (though I had Lemieux to off-set that with at the time, thankfully). I can appreciate what is happening. However, I don't need to be force-fed what I am seeing constantly, and have it forced down my throat, and forced to swallow all of it for however long my Calgary Flames team plays. Give me a break.
The accolades and media attention are 100% deserved in my opinion - we really are seeing a generational player unfolding before us I think. Let me hate him for how good he is and what he is doing against my favourite team. Don't make me hate him undeservedly more because you are trying to force feed him during Flames games, and making those less enjoyable as a fan ALL THE TIME.

Fair enough, go read up on the Lemieux draft and decide for yourself

Somewhat understandable these days when so many people have relocated to Calgary from Edmonton.
What bothers me more - local kids wearing Avalanche and Knights jerseys. I don't think they moved here from Denver or Las Vegas.

I don't remember that.
The biggest spotlight he ever got was for setting up Crosby for the gold medal and because Sid called his name. Was a benefactor of the at the time Crosby hype.
I do wish the Calgary radio guys showed the balls to cut off the McDavid fawning on our airwaves. Call him out in a humorous fashion.. "Elliotte, you know which market you're talking to don't you?"
SNET is notoriously tone deaf outside of edmonton and Toronto broadcasts. It's strange that they still don't have a clue even though the online feedback has been nothing but negative.
Do they not have people surveying comments for feedback, or do they just not give a #### about their audience?

If I'm Friedman, I'm not milking the Matthews praise for an entire segment on a Montreal sports talk radio station. It just seems like common sense. What is there not to get.

Watching that Lemieux special on his draft was pretty good. clearly Pittsburgh did what they could to get him, my favourite was when their rookie goalie won a few games and was sent to the minors right after that. Thus the reason for the lottery, that was as blatant as could be.

If McDavid was playing for another team that wasn't a Flames rival, I would be glad to be in on enjoying the spectacle. He's an undeniably amazing offensive player now, and he plays a really entertaining game to watch. I hate that the Oilers got him, and I kind of dislike his bland wafer-like personality, but denying his skills and his entertainment value is just denying reality.
It actually annoys me most of all that he plays for a team that prevents me from enjoying watching a rare generational talent. The fact that the media won't shut up about him makes that worse.

Thank god we have McJesus and Drai with the Oilers and not in TO. Imagine the immensity of CBC gloat then, especially on Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday. As if we don't get bombarded with Toronto already! If there's one team I hate more than any other team in the league, it's the TO Make Beliefs! And I hate all the trades that the Flames did with them.

No. Never.
Having had McDavid and Draisaitl arrive in Toronto along with Auston Matthews would have been infinitely more palatable than their being in Edmonton.
This would not have been even remotely as nauseating as the present dark timeline.

I don’t know though, do they actually pay attention to McDavid in the US? It seemed like Wayne Gretzky was not really well known in the US until after he went to LA.
Hockey seems very local in the US, when I meet people in the states and we talk hockey it’s about their local teams.

Oddly enough though wasn't it the Senators who tanked for Alexander Daigle the straw that finally broke that Camels back? I seem to remember hearing how the owner wanted them to lose games they probably couldn't win anyway to draft Daigle....that didn't work out so well.

Psst...Your insecurity is showing.
Best player in the NHL will be talked about. Especially when he is putting up points the way he has been.

Surprised you wouldn't say that's Matthews.
Imagine if McDavid was a Hab and you got to hear about him at every intermission of your games against other teams.
I guarantee .... your attitude would change.

If he played in the 80's he might be broken from slamming into nets and boards from trying to use his speed so wrecklessly.

Oh it would be annoying as hell.
But I wouldn't expect the media to stop talking about him just because I was a Leaf fan and he played for the Habs.

McDavid makes me question whether I care to be an NHL fan. A decade of incompetence + dumb luck is rewarded? Might as well follow 6/49 numbers. It’d cost me less than season tickets and pay off better in a win.
If you are a journalist not a fan I get the attraction. Dude does stuff with the puck that no one else can do. Or has ever done. If you’re agnostic to who wins or how ####ty it is that cups are decided by luck why wouldn’t you be enamoured by that.
