In that sense, they have beaten Montreal twice. The first game when the opposition was playing the second of a back to back while the Flames were coming off a 3 day break.
The second win is also against Montreal. A team that has 3 wins over their last 11 games.
I am not saying the Flames beating Montreal isn't great. Just not sure what point you were trying to make with your post.

This is what real coaching does. It takes a roster and makes it better than the sum of it's parts. I strongly feel that the anti-'try an elite coach' brigade was actually posters upset that this roster wasn't giving it it's all under crappy coaches. Almost bitter in wanting them to fail rather than see them succeed under proper guidance.
|
The concern has never been that a better coach could not get more out of them. Tbe concern has always been that a better coach would produce only short-term rests. If Darryl Sutter cannot do it, then I am sceptical that anyone can.
But make no mistake: this is not over. We will see how they continue to play down the stretch. We will see how they look next season. I hope to god they prove me wrong, but the players have not come close to doing so just yet.
Anyhow, I am happy with this fantastic win.

Weird that the negative posters are still viewing the team under the Ward lens.
This is not the same team. Not sure you got the memo, but it's a different philosophy, different approach, drastically different bench management, and is serving as a reset for the guys that were in the doghouse before the change.
More changed this week than you think. These players aren't over performing, they were vastly underperforming. Now they're not.

Not against enjoying the win at all. I said in my OP, its great they won!
I just don't get why some posters are finding the need to call out groups of people after 2 wins. The core still hasn't proven anything yet. 2 games should not be enough to change minds. That's what I mean by pumping the breaks - lets wait and see before letting this group of players off the hook.

The 2019-20 Flames were a 49.38% CF team under Geoff Ward.
That 6-0 win streak was a mirage driven by a bump in shooting and save percentages that was probably inevitable after they had been one of the unluckiest teams in the league prior to that.
These "two games" have seen the Flames post a 63.13% corsi.
They've played elite hockey under Darryl Sutter and I'm not just talking about the fact that they won the games.
I'm talking about the fact that they've dominated these games - against a division rival they are competing with for a playoff spot.
The last time I saw the Calgary Flames dominated a game like this was February 26th, 2019 when they absolutely suffocated the Islanders at Nassau Coliseum. And even then, they were not getting the same calibre of in-game adjustments and individual instruction that is on blatant display.
Now read excerpt from this article:
Quote:
On Dec. 12, 2011, the L.A. Kings fired head coach Terry Murray. Under Murray, the Kings were 12th in the western conference, but still just two points out of a playoff spot. They hired Darryl Sutter to replace him on Dec. 17, 2011, and he made them an eighth seed playoff team with a five-point cushion.
Under Murray, the Kings were a .517% team with a 52.0% 5v5 CF. Under Sutter, the Kings became a .618% team with a 55.7% 5v5 CF. Although they still had to battle to make the playoffs, they very noticeably improved, and it’s paid massive dividends for the franchise. Murray had been coach since 2008, but the Kings hadn’t started making the playoffs until 2010; it took a coaching change to elevate them to the next level.
|
That was 2015 when... Darryl Sutter was being cited as an example of the difference a coaching change can make.

It’s not the time or place for too much attention to this
But I will note that the team is doing a lot of things in a materially different fashion
And consistent with the direction of the new coach, who is a proven winner and effective coach
Sometimes things actually line up with the obvious explanation
You did say you enjoyed the win too, which is nice

Darryl has no respect for the Oilers and boasts a 30-6-7 record against them since 2002.
They're gonna get bent over like the Habs did over the last three days.
He will make sure of it.

At no point in the post Peters win streak did the Flames play any better. They got hot goaltending and their underlying numbers weren't good.
You can't draw any conclusions from only 2 games about how good the team is, but I think it's fair to say they are playing differently, in a good way.
Also, to all the people who say the Flames are slow, do you still think they are too slow?

|
Nope.
I definitely said there was zero chance the Flames would fire Ward mid-season, but I did not "openly mock those who wanted a coaching change." I WANTED A COACHING CHANGE, and was pleasantly surprised when it happened. I don't think I am alone in that.
And let's be clear, here: my responses have been directed specifically to those who appear to believe that Sutter solves all of the teams problems. I am ecstatic with the hire, and happy with the win, but will continue to regard these juniour-high-level "told you so" retorts as exceptionally premature. Mine are responses to juvenile posts like this:

And while I did not respond to it, these are the sorts of posts that drive me nuts:

Posts that come across as typical internet "gotchas!"

I think the truth lies in the middle there somewhere, leaning a little more toward your thoughts. Problem is we've all had our hopes burned so many times, it's going to take a while to turn this big boat of negativity around.
