I can't say for everyone else, but my animosity towards him is based around him lying about creating a crime that is based around racial violence, he was trying to feed a fire to get himself a raise, so honestly F that guy.

The fact that he's black and gay is what makes staging an attack on a black and gay person because he's black and gay so aggravating.

We're emerging from the stone age here, and a person such as Smollett should be happy that he's not getting attacked for being black and gay. Instead, he pretends that he was attacked to further his career. Black and/or gay people should be the maddest about this.

The worst part for me was that he was willing to testify against people that he knew were innocent.

Are we?

Again, not dismissing what he actually did, but like, come on.

Why don't you come right out and say what you mean here? Are you actually saying that people are pissed off NOT because he staged a hate crime, BUT because is a black man doing something wrong? Really peter? Really? Because that's what it's sounding like you're saying.

Damn, son. Pretty pathetic.

And trout, you're insinuating that it's because he's gay? You two have got to be kidding me.

Really?

It has nothing to do with him faking a beating by two "white Maga guys?" He's scum and it has nothing to do with who he's having sex with, or what color his skin is.

SMFH...

I'm going to say that all the specific attention to it is because he's black and gay, yes.

Not everyone, obviously, and I didn't even mean people in this thread. I just meant the overall culture. Not sure why you got offended.

The attention is because he is a celebrity. All celebrities get this attention when they commit a crime.

I would argue that the outrage might be bigger if it was a white guy false accusing two African Americans of beating him up and pouring black paint on him.

Smolletts is getting a lot of support from people who should really know better.

I don't support him at all. What he did was wrong. Why are we still talking about it? Is this somehow worse than an actual hate crime? A lot of people are treating it like it is.

Well maybe I'll go down a step here because I'm not paying attention to it in the news, I only heard and read about it here.

But if what you're saying is true, that's insane. I don't know how anyone could read about this and not think that it's outrageous for a black and gay man to exploit his minority(s) to further his career, and do it in such an egregious way. Black and gay people should be f-ing pissed about this. I'm white and straight and I feel bad for black and gay people that have actually had bad stuff happen to them because of who they are.

It blows my mind that anyone thinks it's BECAUSE he's black and gay that people are mad that the fricken Chicago Police spent a bunch of resources investigating a crime that absolutely deserved investigating, only to find out that it was faked. What a little son of a bitch that guy is. Black, gay, or otherwise.

I’m personally not pissed. He committed a crime, I don’t see it as much more interesting that that.

It’s kind of pathetic, but certainly doesn’t affect me in the same way a hate crime would.

Things like “some people just need killing” seems over the top.

Staging a hate crime when we're in the process of trying to eliminate them from society is pretty reprehensible. I can't believe people don't care. If my daughter lied to me about being bullied at school and had me going to the principal and the teacher, only to find out it was faked so she could get more treats, she'd be in, what we call, "big trouble".

I guess I better bow out of this topic, because I'm stunned that this is no big deal, and that "people are only mad because he's black/gay".

Staging a hate crime to further his career in probably the most racially charged climate in the US in the last 50 years, ho hum.

Not much more interesting than a crime!

What a load of ####.

He's not going to get off easy, if this goes to trial, all of the evidence gathered by the police will be up front in open court, and when they depose Smolletts, he's going to have to either come clean or lie under oath.

“In the process of trying to eliminate them”? Hate crimes? That’s pretty much been an ongoing process for decades with no even relative end in sight. How do you even attempt to “end” hate crimes? I’m not even sure we’ve made enough progress to have one high profile fakery be of any significance at all to the overall “mission.”

And I agree, he should be “in big trouble.” But the reaction is over the top. The sort of vocabulary being used is generally reserved for pedophiles. People are being ridiculous. Why?

He was going to testify that 2 innocent people committed a hate crime against him, and presumably send them to jail, so that he could further his career. Are you guys serious?
