Exactly. Same with Fox coming out with a statement effectively praising the decision and implying they're glad to have him back on the show.

The fact the mayor (very left) AND the police force AND the police union are angry is very telling, given the 3 of them are rarely on the same page.

Normally a DA will make a call to not prosecute and it is the "right" decision, and those who know the case facts will agree (either evidence is weak or tarnished). But here, the people with all the evidence are flabbergasted given it was a rock solid case and open/shut.

I'd be fine with the punishment agreed to if it was part of a guilty plea.

I know you just troll, but I have been having to explain this to my legit redneck family on facebook already... This IS an example of privilege. Rich privilege. It's the same thing as OJ or Michael Jackson. Even though they were members of a traditionally underprivileged group, their fame and wealth allowed them the ability to easily navigate the legal system. Individual cases do not change the systematic disadvantages that groups in America face.

Done. End of story.
I can agree here. But what’s got people bothered is that the summary of facts was available for everyone to read. They had texts. The cheque. The two brothers corroborating. It’s pretty much open shut. However with the level of legal battle that would of ensued for filing a false police report. They obviously felt it wasn’t worth it to pursue it. Which is a far cry from folding the case due to lack of evidence. If he had came out and said he wanted to put it behind him I wouldn’t have any issue here.

I guess it worked out ok. He got himself into the situation because he was rich and famous. An average dude would never pay someone to commit a hate crime because A) he couldn't afford it and B) because he's not famous and no one would care. So I guess if being rich and famous got him into the mess, it's ok if it gets him out of it....right?

I mean at best he's a C-lister so not sure he fits to traditional definition of famous. I would guess the vast majority of society had no idea who he was before, and within three months of this will never hear from him again. His Wiki page is more than 50% related to this incident.

Also, speaking of his Wiki, I had absolutely no idea he was in the original Mighty Ducks movie. So there you go, maybe the only meaningful thing I learned from this mess.

Its a real odd situation here, since its not only "rich" (or fame) playing into his release potentially, but then on the flip side there is also the fact he is part of 2 other protected classes (LGBT, PoC) that makes it tough for people to criticize him.

That said, with the Chicago PD releasing his full file publically all but guarantees the guy's name gets drawn through the mud (appropriately).

Sounds like he'll get booked on federal charges here shortly anyways.

He made the mistake of coming out of this trying to blame the police and everyone but himself.

He's come across as a jerk

The City of Chicago says Jussie Smollett has refused to pay more than $130,000 US to reimburse the costs of investigating what authorities say was a staged racist, anti-gay attack against him.

The city's law department also said in a statement Thursday that it will be drafting a lawsuit to be filed "in the near future" in response, and will sue the Empire actor in Cook County Civil Court.

Quote:
he municipal code stipulates that the city can triple the amount originally demanded if someone fails to pay an initial amount. That means the city could demand more than $390,000 US from Smollett.

A suit could lead to a drawn-out battle in civil court that could end in a trial focused on the question of whether Smollett did or didn't orchestrate the Jan. 29 attack.

I mean, yes, he did something wrong, but let's not pretend that most of the public animosity towards him isn't because he's black.

Or gay.

I don't know - people seem pretty riled up about Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman (two white ladies).

...what?
No, not the whole ‘faking a heinous attack and total lack of refusal to admit blame’ thing. Yep, totally perverse racism.

I would have thought he'd pay for this to go away, but I guess a few more minutes in the limelight is worth the possible $260,000 extra he could pay.

He tried to pin a fake crime on white people, specifically white republicans. If there is a racial undertone to this story, he has himself to thank for that.
