Just no one old. We need someone who can stay in that role for a few years.

We have the cap space and apparently he wants to play in Canada, but not in a major market.

So Toronto and Montreal are out.

Edmonton can't afford him.
Winnipeg can't afford him.

That leaves Calgary, Vancouver and Ottawa.

I think its a possibility for sure. I wouldn't say there is no way.

If Tavares doesn't sign with NYI, its definitely a possibility.

I can’t think of a more even trade than Brodie for Hoffman. Both players are on the fringe of being core, both player are similar in age, and contract salary and term. Historically, a 4 D would have more value than a top 6 Winger but Brodie is coming off a couple of sub par seasons while Hoffman has been steady.

Ottawa needs to fill the hole that Karlsson is likely going to create. Brodie will give them another elite skating defender only with some short comings. Hoffman is a quick winger with an elite shot exactly what we need. On paper neither GM wins or loses the trade while potentially filling a hole. Ideally, I would like to see a Right shooting RW but in this case a top 6 skilled winger addresses a need.

Yup, I had the same line of thinking...Karlsson's disenchantment might force OTT to look for a puck moving dman...

Is the bold true?

Because that's the key to signing Tavares in Calgary. People say over and over again, "Tavares isn't signing in Calgary, why would he sign in Calgary?!"

THAT'S why.

If it's true.

If it isn't true, then I agree Calgary has no shot at him.

But if he does prefer a Canadian market but not one that's a circus, then Calgary goes shooting right to the top of the list of possible destinations.

I can't imagine the Hawks giving up Saad for Brodie.

Brodie has been really, really bad for 2 seasons.

Saad had a down year last year, but it wasn't close to Brodie bad.

Yet Brodie had nearly as many points as Saad did from the back end, while being paid $1.5 million less against the cap and also while playing a much more important position (D vs W)

Kyle Okposo might have started the Canada rumours in December, as Tavares has been pretty tight lipped about everything.

“He was always talking politics. In the locker room, during team dinners, and at team meetings. It was similar as to how most celebrities and just about anyone with an opinion and a twitter account tweeted how they were moving to Canada if Trump wins the election. Although Johnny might actually be serious.”

I guess Tavares is a serious political animal, and might be looking for a different political climate for his family. Either way, the move to Canada has always been linked to personal preference and not chasing money. That's why we keep hearing about his friendship with Hamonic.

Tavares. Up to the man if he wants to come here, but the Flames are going to be pursuing him.

I have never seen any credible source that states either he wants to play in Canada nor that he doesn't want to be in the spotlight.

Fair enough, me neither.

Of course, that doesn't mean it's not true or a possibility, and if it is, Brad Treliving has a really good chance at having his face tattooed on your back haha.

Bah, just realized I picked LWs. The RWs I like are few and far between (or untouchables).

Didn't select Tavares, don't want to jinx it. Not that I'm superstitious.

Someone mentioned that Tavares has been tight-lipped about this and I think that's a clue to what will happen. The NHL is a league based on rumours and whispers by agents, management, players, etc. There has been very little about Tavares. That makes me think he is happy where he is and is going to re-sign there. No smoke so I'm guessing no fire.

Still think the Canucks land one of Karlsson or Tavares. Maybe even both.

I think Treliving will be very wary of paying the price asked for most of these guys. So I think a trade might be hard to achieve. I can't call not overpaying a "failure" though.

i sort of thought Karlsson would be more likely to go to a contender a la Kevin Durant...

cap space is a big deal of course, but if you are JT or Karlsson would you really want to sign your last contract with a teams that is years away from being a SC contender?

Depends. What is the main desire for the player? Is it the cup? Is it location? Is it leadership?

There are ways to accelerate rebuilds. And I think if Vancouver got one or the other player, by the time their next contract is up, they'll have a shot at a cup run.

I'm just don't think NHL players think like NBA players. There's no super team to go to, the cap wont allow it. You're not guranteed a cup wherever you go as a free agent. So why make it top priority?

Thats why I think Vancouver can make a big splash in one of the two top player available this year. They have the location, they have a decent young core of player for someone to lead.

Galchenyuk is my vote. I don't think they land any big FA.

I'll feel better about the Hamonic trade after Tavares signs.
