Even before the "courting period" was introduced, we never saw teams give up a first-round pick just to be able to talk to a pending UFA.
The Flames gave up a third-round pick (67th overall) for Bouwmeester's rights. I don't know if any team ever gave up more than that.
Now that the courting period exists, it's much less likely that anyone will give up anything just to talk to a guy.

Wasnt it a fifth for Widemans rights as well? We do that often.

Also, no Tyler Johnson on the list? He could be had as well I am sure. Wouldn't mind that trade scenario either.

I don't know if I'd say it happens often. That was 6 years ago, before the courting period was introduced, and when Feaster was the GM.
Also, even with Wideman, he was free to talk to and the Flames just had to give up the pick when he agreed to sign.

Nino Niederreiter (Trade).
He's the right age (25), decent size, plays right wing, would be a good acquisition for the Flames.

Voted for Mike Hoffman. I think we are one or two more Mikes/Michaels away from being contenders.

If I think it, it is surely more likely to happen.

Do people REALLY believe that Tavares is the most likely top 6 acquisition?
RoR perhaps, sure. Hoffman or Stone, doable.
I think BT is going to face plant and we'll see a panic FA signing ie JVR or Neal.
Then again he's not afraid to go for it, so who knows.

POLL REQUEST - Which Legit Top 6 Forward Do You THINK The Flames Will Acquire?
I guess I’ve become jaded by this franchise’s history, but I’m expecting something really lame like Grabner and a Nigel Dawes-style “who?” acquisition that gets sold by Tre as a top 6 player waiting to break out.
So I suppose it’s 28.

I accidentally voted Marner, although I think William Nylander more likely.
Of course neither is likely, but Leafs need a top D and we need a top F. There is a trade to be made. Obviously TO will try hard to acquire such without surrendering one of their top guys. Same with us.
Without knowing any inside information we are all just wild ass guessing anyway.

Tyler Johnson is actually a pretty legit option as I think Point has passed him on the depth chart...
Maybe folks confused "think" vs "hope"...?

28. I lost my faith in Treliving's dealmaking genius.

1. Willing to give up a core piece off the Flames roster in a trade for a legit top-six forward?
If Yes, then Trade for impact forward happens.
If No, go to next step.
2. Willing to give term to an aging UFA?
If Yes, then UFA signing of impact forward happens.
If No, go to next step.
3. Welcome to essentially the same top-6 the Flames opened last season with.
