Unlikely, Germany was the highest ranking team remaining. I don't think you look ahead when you are not the favored to win.

I would say that's true of some cp posters but I doubt the team was focused on anything but this match.

Germany is ranked #2 in the world and Canada #10

They have played 14 times, and Germany has won 13 of them.

The girls were not looking ahead. They were beaten by an excellent team. And beating the same team twice in a week is extremely difficult.

On a side note: kind of weird that the teams from the same groups met in the semis (Brazil and Sweden as well) - you would think the schedule would cross over.

Oh that's right - there were only 3 groups. That is so unusual.

If anything there was maybe a little bit of false confidence from beating Germany in the group stages but really i don't think Canada looked like they looked past Germany or weren't in the game.

They made a singular terrible decision (nerves, big stage, pressure) and gave away a penalty kick. Once that goal was in the whole game changes and Germany can play a comfortable game.

I felt the first 30 minutes the Germans pushed quite hard and had the upper hand. Canada defended well with the exception of that one horrible split second decision by the defender that gave Germany a penalty kick.

They had a number of good chances and probably should have had one with the exception of a great defensive play by the German defender to head the ball out from the goal line.

Overall I thought the girls played hard and had a good chance. Just got beat by a better team.

From what I saw the Canadians played hard and were in the game. That penalty kick goal was a result of an unfortunate error, and a German defender made a great play to stop what looked like a sure Canadian goal.

Regroup and onto the bronze medal game.

I think they are in tough against Brazil but again this team has a lot of heart. One of the reasons I like to follow them. It will be a sad day when Christine Sinclair retires and I hope she has a big game.
