Leafs have managed to rid themselves of Clarkson, Kessel, and Dion. Pretty impressive, even though they had to take on a pile of garbage to chuck Phaneuf.

They also took on a corpse to get rid of Clarkson.

The Leafs had $5.25 million tied up in Clarkson till 2019-2020, $7 million for Phaneuf tied up until 2019-2020 and $8 million in Kessel tied up until 2021-2022. All gone.

With the 1.2 million retained for Kessel, that's $19.05 million in bad longterm contracts that Leafs were able to get rid in the last year. Kessel and Phaneuf are still good players, but the cap that they've been able to get back will be even more beneficial.

What are the Sens thinking here? They gave up a 2nd round pick and a B-level prospect in Tobias Lindberg. For what? An overpriced defenceman? Getting out of short term bad contracts?

Leaf fans are going to be very smug at the game tonight, and rightly so. The Leafs not only got rid of all their bad contracts, they received a respectable amount of prospects back in the process.

TheScorpion's trade breakdown!

Senators: LOSE, because they got Phaneuf
Leafs: LOSE, because the best thing they got for Phaneuf was Colin Greening
Flames: WIN, because Stajan scored in game six!

And by "too bad" I mean too bad for Leafs fans. I personally don't care.
Is this trade possibly a pre-emptive strike to let Stamkos know they are making the space for him so don't go and sign a contract with Tampa?

Yeah, I dont see any way this isnt a huge loss for Ottawa.

Phaneuf is a bad player on an even worse contract.

prepare for Tobias Lindberg to be anointed one of the best upcoming prospects by Toronto media and Big Tuna.

I remember when the Leafs traded Ponikarovsky for Luca Caputi and there was a 5-minute segment on the latter on TSN. Hilarious.

And tons of articles too. http://www.downgoesbrown.com/2010/03...-for-luca.html

Phaneuf just moved 9 points closer to a playoff spot. Ottawa is only 4 points out.

I was wondering about him. I've never seen him play but he has decent numbers for a 20 year old in the AHL. Anyone ever have any eyeballs on him in game?

Anyway saw 3 tweets with "could be the best player of the trade".

Marek repeatedly stated Aulie would be the best player of the last trade. Did you know Leafs prospects glow and smell beautiful too?

Greening, an AHL player at this point, makes 3.2M next year. Michalek, injured and with 10 points this season, makes 4M next year, and Cowen, a healthy scratch who will make 4.5M next year, were moved.

Depending on how you value Michalek, that's 11.7M of near wasted cash moved for Dion Phaneuf who has 33M left on his deal after this year.

When you break it down, Ottawa takes on ~20M in actual salary, spread out over 5 years, and gets a top 4 defenseman who plays 20 minutes a night and puts up 40 points for essentially a 2nd round pick and a prospect.

Makes sense from Toronto's perspective as well. They don't care about cash nearly as much, and short-term those contracts don't hurt.

What newfound cap space? They took more salary back than Phaneuf made.

Short term though. Future cap space.

I wish we had gotten a 2nd in our Phaneuf deal. Could've used another WHL grinder in our prospect pool.
