Interesting comments from the Senior Meteorologist named Stu Ostro, from weather.com.

Second comments down...

Oops, they literally just updated it, third down.

Its only a 5mph difference from what it was in the last update. 155 as opposed to 160.

Won't take much to bump it back to a Cat 5.

From those live shots on CNN it does still look like there is traffic on the Highways out of NOLA. Cant be many worse places to be in a Cat 5 Hurricane then in a friggin car on the Highway.
They say that if there's a tornado and you're in your car on the highway to go to the nearest highway overpass, get out and crawl right up to the top underneath the upper road. [/b][/quote]
Who's they?

That's horrible advice actually. The meteorologists around here are constantly reminding people NOT to do that. The best place if you're stuck outside is in the lowest ditch you can find or inside a culvert.

Those bridges/overpasses actually can produce an increased force.

There is a report that a section of the roof on the Superdome is leaking and the worst is yet to come.

Parts of Gulfport, MS, which ended up taking a more direct hit than New Orleans are under 10 feet of water.

"New Orleans is sinking.."

I've been glued to the coverage when I sit down to watch it, amazingly scary stuff. Don't know what else to say really, hopefully that part of the world come sout okay when all is said and done. I can't imagine people being put into the Saddledome as a shelter, then having the roof peel off.

Fortunately from what they're saying, there's plenty of room for everyone in the concourse area which is contained within the walls and is very secure.

Chalmette (just east of New Orleans proper in St. Bernard parish) has about 10 feet of water and is rising. People in Chalmette highschool are huddling in the hallways, after the water blew out the windows.

WDSU Update

The building has sustained significant damage. There are reports that the water is 10-feet deep near the high school and is rapidly rising. -- WDSU.com Web Staff

Chalmette is where my friend and her entire family lives. Luckily, they have all evacuated, and she was in LA for her friends wedding. But if the water is 10 feet high, that means that their houses are pretty much completely under water.

This is one of those urban myths.

If you're in a tornado you should get as close and tight to the ground as you can.

There have been multiple reports of people trying to take cover under highway overpasses when a tornado has passed over and they've been sucked out by said tornado.

Edit: Sorry, didn't mean to dogpile on you - didn't read ahead in the thread.
