Just got back from the game... I didn't think it was as bad as many people thought it was I guess. We were outplayed, but not as bad as the 5-2 (really more like 5-1) showed it was, but whenever we needed a save, Hiller let in a goal and the goalie that played on the other side of the ice was much better. The 2nd, 4th and 5th goal were absolute backbreakers... goaltender just slaughtered us.
I watched the game too (not at the HP Pavillion mind you) and I disagree with your post other than that Hiller didn't make saves and slaughtered us. I thought it was as bad as many people thought it was.
Basically the Flames looked like a timbits team facing an NHL team. Other than Granlund, Ferland, Jones & Hamilton, everyone else was seriously no good. Even Johnny & Bennett were mostly crap tonight.

This is the first game I've seen Frolik play live, and (granted I don't get to see full games anymore these days) but I can see why Treliving targetted him. He played well on TV, but I really liked the game he played today.
The ice was really bad.
Lots of frustration with Gio, and while he isn't as amazing as last year, I saw bits and parts of what makes him good. You can see he's being pressured pretty heavy this year... which I guess is to be expected if you are a NHL star. Maybe I've had one too many Mango Lassi's since the game ended, but I'm not really too worried about Gio, I think he'll figure it out.
Wideman has come back to earth quite a bit, but he probably played well above his head. I think he's OK, but would love to get a draft pick for him and see what else we got in the system.

This team with a healthy Carey Price still sucks and goes nowhere.
At least we don't have to worry about a good goalie messing up a top 3 pick.
You know, the sad part about the goalie situation is that Kipprusoff was 8 years too early. He was an elite goalie playing for a really bad front 5 for many years. Now we have the potential for a good front 5 with terrible goaltending.
So sad!
I went to watch Spectre (was alright) and I'm watching the Cricket (Aus vs NZ) and drinking instead.
Never thought I would utter those words when I moved down under.

I went to the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne against Sri Lanka a few years ago. It was fantastic (I think). Had more than enough beers to help me forget about the crap I've just watched.

Hiller was in mid-season form! .827 S% and four goals that should have been stopped. Minor league goaltender is minor league goaltender. Hard for a team to build any confidence when you see that many easy shots find the back of the net.

Gio needs a break of some sort. Either sit him, put him on the IR, send him for reconditioning or something. He just needs to not play for a while. Wideman just shouldn't play for a while. The coaches should try Russell in net, can't turn out that much worse... Bennett should be a leader on this team, the kid has what it takes and it'd be great for that to rub off on everyone. Hamilton is turning into our best defender, Brodie is awesome but there's been a few games where Hamilton was as good or better. Brodie and Hamilton are the building blocks on the back end and those who were suggesting he should be traded need to give their head a shake.
The season is over, maybe not mathematically, but it's over. I don't think there is shame in admitting it and management needs to take advantage of the situation somehow. The goal isn't Matthews but the desired result is.

Well, anything that can go wrong has gone wrong. Just waiting for that 9-0 drubbing at some point this season to really put the nail in the coffin on this iteration of the Calgary Flames. Could very well come against Dallas too. those guys are legit this year.
At this point I feel like re-signing Gio before you got to see what he had this year was a mistake. I feel like I felt that way before but maybe not. This is the year before Iggy left Gio, that's not a good Gio to have for 6 more years. Its also gut check time for his leadership in the locker room.
I've not given Ramo any quarter this year so I'm not going to give Hiller any either. That was weak.Other than goal #1, he should've had all four of them. First game back after missing a month, he better get a block of starts win or lose. If trash can Ramo gets them, Hiller should too.
Constant positives: Hamilton, Brodie (Who incidentally looked very frustrated all game tonight) Bennett, Gaudreau, Frolik. Monahan is hit or miss, hopefully rounds into form soon.
Can we please move Backlund and let Granlund take his place? The guy is ready, has been ready since pre season. Theres no reason other than favoritism from Hartley of other guys to keep this guy down. He looked really really good tonight.
If I hear Trelving say he's not going to make a trade for the sake of making a trade one more time... Seriously, make some trades, barring a miracle run this years playoff hopes are Oiler-esque.
move the expiring contracts. Get some kids up from the farm. Loosen up a bit and let them play.
You can see the whole team is just wound tighter than a snare drum and frustrated and just white knuckled. Time to just break the tension.

Well, Ramo is just the same. Lets see how Hiller fares with 12 straight starts. I bet the numbers get to about the same. My point being, they both suck. I'm a Hiller guy but there's no goalie on the Flames main roster right now that I want on the main roster. Plane tickets to Sibera for all of them.
Because everything went correctly last season. Now we are not getting any secondary scoring, our best defenseman is trying to recover from a serious arm injury on the fly with terrible results, our passable goaltending is not playing at a passable level, and our former 3/4 guys are playing like #6's.
All the positive luck we received last year is firmly working against the Flames this year.
It's not a big deal. We received Hamilton because we were good last season. If he continues to play as he has the past two games, which is more like how he played all season in Boston the last two years, it would be like getting a top 5 pick defenseman in spite of reaching the 2nd round of the playoffs.
If you add any of the top 5 pick players to the Flames stable and Jankowski who is ripping the NCAA apart, then the Flames will have 7 key young players between the new pick, Janko, Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett, Brodie, and Hamilton. The team will be in a good position in the future.
We're in a good spot in terms of the rebuild, just not having a good season at all. Los Angeles had a year like this when they were on the upswing and ended up getting Doughty. If the Flames walk away at the end of the season with Matthews, that would probably have the same impact. Imagine him and Gaudreau together. That'd be fun.

I agree, I just always wanted Macdavid. Oh well I agree, we over achieved last year and we are still in full rebuild mode. Lets hope Gillies and Macdonald can develop too.
