You'd think they'd go for a hockey guy as the main host.
I always cringe when someone is trying to talk about a game or team and not know quite what they're talking about. Strombo is great at what he does, but I'm not sure this is the gig for him.

I think some people have no idea what a host is.

I was wondering this as well. What were Friedman's "hockey guy" credentials before his break in sports media? How about me? I've posted regularly on a hockey forum for 7 years, am I a hockey guy? Do they have to be ex-players/coaches? I think we can agree that a lot of times those are the worst commentators.
Strombo has been in the media forever interviewing a variety of people on a variety of subjects. He's a Canadian man. He probably has decent enough hockey knowledge to introduce a Leafs-Habs match up.

Jeff Marek's come a long way from hosting a pro-wrestling radio talk show.
I like George - he does his research, and is a smart, insightful guy. To be honest, I think he's meant for bigger things than HNIC, but I believe he'll do a fine job.

Then please enlighten me as to what a host for HNIC would do for the program, instead of being a thanks-whore about it? As far as I've seen, it's always just been their hotstove panel guys, PBP, reporters, and Ron/Don.
Would he be doing the after hours sit downs with the players? I don't care enough to read into the deets. Could work, as those segments tend to revolve around the player's background/family/hometown. But even then, I'd prefer someone closer to the game to be doing that than Strombo reading off some cards.

I am going to steal and over use your "thanks-whore". Superb.

He'll be hosting, throwing to segments, introducing panels, guests, maybe moderating the panels like hotstove, he host tends to be the referee in this regard. He might be doing player interviews but probably not and certainly not in-game interviews and lockerroom ones etc. As host he'll be the overseer of it all. George is great at asking questions and getting out of the way.
Strombo is a smart guy though, if he does do an in depth interview with a player, he'll be more then prepared. Ron McLean was/is at his best when he's in full host mode, not showing much much or little he knows about hockey.
He's Canadian, he grew up watching hockey and watches it now. If he was some British guy Roger's flew in to be a hockey host I might agree with you but that isn't the case here.
Please surrender me your thanks.

The real question is whats happening with Elliotte Friedman. He is by far the best reporter on the panel, and should have a place with HNIC. Was anything said about his future?
