Never live, but a lot of highlight packages and that sort of thing. Even in his highlights, he's guilty of those things, so by my estimation, being that those are his current problems, I don't see how they are going to change.
Plus of course, I supplement it with the ramblings of actual hockey analysts, not to say you're not credible, but are you suggesting that one must have personally watched game after game of his live to get an read on him, and that relying on information obtained by footage and the notes of other professionals that actually have watched him live is insufficient?
I don't create opinions out of fairy dust, if that's what you're asking.
I mean, a lot of people were high on Monahan at the draft, I wonder how many people "actually watched him play" or... you know... gathered opinions based on reels and the analysis of professionals in the field.
He won back to back NLA goaltender of the year awards before coming over to play in Calgary. I would hardly call that "average"... clearly he was a dominant player over there. Those accolades put him in good company as well seeing as both Jonas Hiller and Cristobal Huet have each won that award twice. I can't help but to think that you are selling his body of work short. He has more individual awards to his name than Karri Ramo, and also has a better international track record as well.
Karri Rämö played in one of the best teams in the KHL.
But, a .906save% and a 3.01GAA for me is pretty average, especially because it's in the Swiss league, it kinda makes it worse for me.
I'm not selling anything short, I'm just trying to be realistic here, oh and Finland is so stacked in goaltenders come world championships, it's not a shocker he has a better track record internationally, because Rämö has hardly played there, but this isn't about Berra VERSUS Rämö, I just pointed out that Rämö has been better in Europe than Berra has, which is just the truth.
I wish all the best for Berra, I hope he will become a stud goaltender.

No need to be defensive. You sounded like you had a considered opinion and I wanted to know what level of knowledge it was based on. If he wasn't any better in Russia, that's genuinely of interest because we might start pointing fingers at the scouts who brought him in.
Not trying to cast doubt on your information gathering which I'm sure has been very careful and extensive. But you know, it's the internet, people "create opinions out of fairy dust" all the time. I thought this might have been a chance to talk to one of the rare people who do watch Russian hockey.
As for Berra, he's a bit of lesser known quantity for me. He's played above average throughout his career, and with a 42 save effort I don't think you can argue that the guy has talent. I know he's known for giving up an absolute stinker of a game now and then, so if we're patient through those, he may very well be a dependable starter.
Ramo though? I think it's unlikely.
I think you mean "he has all the tools"

I don't watch a lot of KHL games, but I do try to follow the news in the KHL as it happens, and I know Ramo was on a lot of people's radars before the Flames acquired his rights. There seems to be a lot of; "well I never heard of him, so he's probably going to suck", type of mindsets when it comes to player acquisitions.
