Agree about Sony. Their CRT's were amongst the best on the market but they have lost themselves in the HDTV market. I have a 46" Sony Bravia XBR LCD that was a top of the line television at the time of purchase ($4500 not well spent) and it has a horrible ghosting problem wich is disappointing compared to an even older, cheaper Samsung we have that had held up much better. You have to remember too that there's always "The Panel Lottery" to worry about.
Basically if a manufacturer sells x amount of a first run of a specific unit which exceed projections, they may offload LCD panel manufacture to a third-party, which is of fluctuating quality (sometimes better, but typically worse). Sony, Sharp and LG are typically the biggest culprits, but other manufacturers have dipped into third-party panels on occasion as well.
Sometimes it's best to bring a magnifying glass and a small flashlight to inspect the panels when you purchase them. Look for a right-pointing chevron when the TV is off on the panel, as those indicate IPS, where sometimes 3rd parties ship TFT panels when an IPS is expected, which isn't so bad if it's an S-PVA panel, but C-PVA is garbage.
