I to thought the ice was really thick, in grade 1 or something we went public skating, I wouldn't go on the ice thinking that many people on it would not be safe.... and it would sink.

In the 70s, my older brother got to go to a Saturday night Leafs-Canadians game at the Forum and made a "collect" call at the end of the game to tell us all the score.
One of my earliest TV hockey-watching memories, Jyrki Lumme took a penalty for the Canucks at ~17:00 of a period. I thought he had to spend 17 minutes in the penalty box.

It was Columbus. Flames game against the Blue Jackets, actually.
Unfortunate for the player that shot that puck, but at the time I thought he was the best hockey player in the NHL cause of his name, ESPN Knutsen. I would always play with the colombus blue jackets on NHL Hitz 2003 and destroy everything with Knutsen.
Not my misconception, but my friend's sister refused to watch any game the Buffalo Sabres were playing in because she believed that Miro Satan was a devil worshipper and changed his name to that on purpose because "nobody in the world would ever actually have that for a real last name".

I thought that when a player hit a post or the crossbar it counted as a SOG.
I used to think that if there was a fight they didn't get a penalty that they were just resting afterwards.
When I played hockey I thought the game winning goal was the last goal scored until I scored my first ever goal which was a GWG, still have the puck too!
I used to think that if you were a butterfly goalie you'd never stand up.. like you'd always been in the butterfly position. Also thought Miro Satans name was actually pronounced Satan. Also used to call Peter Forsberg Peter Iceberg, because I actually thought that was his name, lol.
