article in the national post talking about the guy who started the okotoks rumor.
Apparently he had reporters all over the world calling the RCMP!

I can't believe how little investigating the news did on either of the stories before reporting it as fact. Finding the original posting is as easy as doing a search on twitter for "#uars okotoks" and following it back to the end.

Basically posted by person A and that was retweeted a few times before person B took that posting word for word and posted it as their own and that then got retweeted like wildfire.

Fast forward 30minutes later when @imnotgonnalie2u who claimed responsibility for the whole thing starts posting his fake news story. really? the guys name was @imnotgonnalie2u and people fell for it? Not only did they fall for it but plastered this guy all over the front page of the papers claiming he was responsible for the whole thing.

Is anyone surprised that NASA can't figure out when and where this thing landed? They'd have to be rocket scientists.

Yeah, it's showing just how bad real journalism is getting. People have been talking about this for some time, but because of the speed news breaks and spreads right now, there is pressure to get the story as quickly as possible so often the proper due dilligence isn't done. Reporters used to source or confirm their stories at least once and usually twice before they'd put their name on it. Now they just take whatever they see off the internet.

I'm not sure how the problem is fixed though. The need to get the scoop or break the story first will probably always come before getting the story right.

Oh! and before you say they weren't lucky. 'They are scientists' and all that crap...

These are the same people who crashed a lander into Mars because they forgot to change Imperial to Metric.
Meh, marriage is one in two. I'd take 1 in 3200 any day.
