I wonder if NYR is willing to move on from Kakko now and could be part of a Hanifin package.
He put up a .5 PPG season last year but he's off to 3 pts in his first 20 games this year.
Still only 22 years old.

I actually really like Kakko, although I can’t explain why he sucks so far this year.
He’s still young and developing.

I have not watched much of Kakko since he entered the league. Does anyone have an opinion on what he looks like as a player? He has struggled to live up to his draft position it seems when you look at the numbers. Is it a similar case to Poolparty? The cliche “all the tools but no toolbox”? Is he buried in a deep team? Is it that he has a short leash under their coach and is moved down the line up quickly when he has a bad game?

Probably because they’re a competing team not really interested in spending time developing players at the NHL level right now, so it just takes longer and isn’t a very linear process. Coach being less tolerant of mistakes etc

Kakko has it all- size, speed, skill, stickhandling, and a great shot (all the S words). He’s still young and learning, and has to get stronger. He’s got Type 1 Diabetes to deal with, too.
He was improving incrementally year after year until this season.

I would be all over Kakko. That's the type of reclamation project you go after.
He looked like he was taking a step last year - he was better than AF.

They have to move out salary to make a trade happen and all things being equal they have about 15 million next year to sign a minimum of 8 players to get them to a 21 man roster including Schneider and Lindgren as RFAs. If one assumes those two dmen will cost them a combined 6+ million, it does not leave much for Kakko and 5 other players.
If they are interested in Hanifin that would make their backend real solid. Could make sense.

I'd like Kakko. But part of me when i look at the Flames roster knows we should target centers and Defensemen.
I'm kind of stuck there. I suppose if they did swing for a Kakko trade I would be too upset but I feel like their assets could be spent more wisely elsewhere.

I think if the team and the amateur scouts like Kakko and they can get a top 60 pick thrown in for Hanifin you take it all day long. Find the centers and the dmen in your other trades or via the draft (strongly suspect they draft a dman with their pick this year). I am more worried about dmen right now, the Flames for better or worse have Kadri and Backlund for another 2 years after this and they will take up the first two center spots anyway.

Kakko and a late 2nd is a brutal return for Hanifin, absolutely terrible.

Each to their own. This is a pretty good write up on Kakko https://blueseatblogs.com/2023/12/12...g-rangers/amp/
Very good defensive player who started breaking out last year and has had poor offensive stats this year. Big body who creates room for smaller more skilled linemates. In my opinion the Flames could do a lot worse than that and a 2nd round pick for Hanifin. But I think Kakko ends up being a solid 50+ point guy who plays a great 200 foot game.
In a lot of ways he reminds me of a Sam Bennet but younger. May never be the PPG guy but brings a lot to any team he plays on.

If he can become jiri lehtonen he would be extremely valuable.

Novak maybe? If NSH is a seller. Roslovic is the only other one I can think of, but he's injured right now.
I have my suspicions that Monahan is playing injured again. He had 13P in the first 15GP, and he followed it up with 6P in 16GP, including a 9 game pointless streak. I wasn't watching any MTL games so that's pure speculation.

Throwing a dart blindly at the wall comes up with the speculation that Monny is playing injured.

Only if the dart hits something.
If the dart hovers in mid-air, Monahan is perfectly healthy.

Kakko is a throw in for Hanifin. Hanifin would be ridiculously good with Trouba or Fox as a partner. Their 1st is also likely 29-32.
Hanifin (50%) and Duehr for Kakko, Schneider, and 2024 1st. If not Schneider then zero retention from Hanifin and take Lindgren and Othmann. Would want Perrault but I doubt they deal him.
