Oh dear. Definitely possible for the Flames to keep their pick if they make the conference finals or win the draft lottery. I guess I’ll have to wait a little longer to be done with those Sean Monahan trade conditions…Sigh…

TB's 1st round pick in 2022, Isaac Howard, just won the Hobey Baker and is going back for his 4th college season. Rumours he and he Lightning don't see eye-to-eye, and they may shop him rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer.

He's a left winger and Tampa's left side is set for years to come. Potentially wants to join a team where he would be able to crack the top 9 almost immediately (absolutely an assumption here).

Yeah, pretty low odds of winning the lottery or making the conference finals. I was wrong though. I said impossible.
I’m just hoping we find a way to win this game tonight, sneak into the playoffs and then draft fantastic players at picks 18 and 22 or whatever.

Defensive coach has Kadri hit his max career goals, Huberdeau close to setting a new personal best, Coleman hit his personal best last season, Sharangovich hit his personal best.... If only Huska would open things up, we could maybe see 5 x 50 goal scorers on this team!

This is insanity. Sutter was a terrible GM, like absolutely horrible. IN a league that was moving in a clear direction to be successful he was drafting good ole western Canadian grinders...and that's the picks he didn't toss away like candy for...western Canadian grinders off other NHL teams.

Yeah Sutter was a terrible GM...even the Kipper deal was a fluke. He basically told SJ he would take either of their goalies and offered a 2nd, Vancouver offered the same and he left it to chance but lucky for us the Sharks assumed our pick would be better (ironic, since the Flames took them out in the WCF)

Some of these 1sts round college picks probably want a spot right away and they see no path to making the team. Tampa isn't going to trade players to make room for Howard, same thing with the Canucks although it might be about money as well.

I wonder if it's actually more that the organization just doesn't want to subject Willander to whatever is going on in that organization right now and he signs in the offseason.
To me I don't see him waiting two more years at college to turn pro.
Also a decent contingent of Swedish players on Vancouver, and historically in the org.
No real prospects/players blocking him on the RH side in Vancouver.
My guess is he signs this offseason.

TBH I wouldn't get a team being so worried about bonuses for a top 15 pick - just give him full bonuses:
https://puckpedia.com/salary-cap/ent...rmance-bonuses
Especially for a guy that's not a super offensive player, so probably tough for him to hit a lot of these metrics.

I’m not sure that an infusion of offensive talent will change our goal scoring fortunes. Technically, Conroy has done that about as much as he can, including getting proven NHL point getters.
Huska’s is a reduce opposition scoring events at all costs system. It’s like Sutter’s shoot from everywhere, low quality scoring chance system from a few years ago - in that it pushes a single way of approaching the game, all the time. It’s more dogma than coaching.
|
Flames had a stretch where they could barely score to save their life...they went how many games without 4 goals?
Seems to be changing lately, and come on now Kadri and Huberdeau are 60 point players

Interesting take in The Athletic this morning on Mason McTavish. Specifically on him being a target for offer sheets, but the context is intriguing:
Quote:
McTavish hasn’t quite developed into the high-end offensive threat the Ducks probably hoped he would be by this point, so they might be reluctant to match any sizable deal. They’re also going to have to pay a number of their younger players in the near future, including Leo Carlsson, Cutter Gauthier (whom they may ultimately view as a center) and goalie Lukas Dostal. Not only is McTavish behind Carlsson and Ryan Strome on the center depth chart, the Ducks rarely spend to the cap anyway. If the Flyers feel there’s still runway for McTavish to reach greater heights offensively and figure out a way to acquire him, he would immediately become their top-line center.
