Well the Flames were sharing an AHL affiliate when Sutter took over and I think their scouting staff was pretty gutted. So he did do a lot of work to rebuild it and the player development system. Obviously helped out by a change in fortune financially and the salary cap.

Easy to imagine him being pretty hands on with picks. But who knows how much of it was Daryl over ruling the staff and saying pick Pelech...or was the talent evaluation just off.

Draft picks should always be high ceiling guys. Mid NHLers are ALWAYS available for cheap or free

To replace Backlund on the 2nd PP? I don't think that will take a high pick...in fact if the team was healthy now he wouldn't be there

Flames fans rejoice! We are done with the Sean Monahan trade conditions, because the Panthers qualified for the playoffs some time ago, and it is impossible for the Flames to finish bottom 10.

We have a nice, simple list of draft picks. (Since NJ’s 1st can’t be a top-10 pick, there aren’t any conditions on that pick either.)

So, we know this is the ammunition Conroy has to build a winner through the draft. Conroy has 1 extra pick overall, over the next 4 drafts, but he has two additional 1sts and an additional 3rd.

FLA’s 1st

Except what if Calgary makes it to the playoffs and makes it to the final four? In that case Montreal would get Florida's pick if I recall correctly.

We’re winning the draft lottery this year, I can feel it!

That would be absolutely amazing. I have a pretty good feeling about the 0.5% chance, if we miss out on the playoffs that is. That 6th overall pick would be a game changer.

Provides some insight into the cost of a player like Zegras in a futures based deal around the draft.

I wonder if the flames try and make a similar move this year(not necessarily for Zegras)

Quote:
[32 Thoughts] Friedman confirms rumors that Montreal tried to acquire Zegras at the ‘24 Draft. The package offered to Anaheim was the 21st OA pick and a young defenseman. Trade fell apart when Ducks picked Sennecke and Habs realized they could draft Demidov so adding Zegras felt redundant to them.

When the forward group was healthy after we acquired Frost and Farabee he was still on PP2. So ya, Huska would still have him in it.

Another down year by Zegras since last draft probably lowers that price.

I was on the Zegras train this year, but after another down year and watching his effort level against the Flames.. no thank you, unless he's really cheap.

Since coming back from injury in January, Zegras actually has 21 points in 30 games - not great, but far better than the 10 in 24 he started the season with.

I think McDavid would be a 60 pt player on this team, Pinder is right.

I’m not sure that an infusion of offensive talent will change our goal scoring fortunes. Technically, Conroy has done that about as much as he can, including getting proven NHL point getters.

Huska’s is a reduce opposition scoring events at all costs system. It’s like Sutter’s shoot from everywhere, low quality scoring chance system from a few years ago - in that it pushes a single way of approaching the game, all the time. It’s more dogma than coaching.

Huska coaches that way because the talent isn't there to play a wide-open game. This is what every coach does when his team lacks scoring ability.

Huberdeau is a 60 point player on this team, and I think McDavid is better than Huberdeau.

I am saying that I think he will keep coaching this way even as more talent comes in.

At what point does he have enough talent to open things up? McDavid centering Rantanen on the second line, because our 1st line is even better? Is that all?

He’s never going to have much more talent than he has right now.

I hope he thinks of something else next year that gets the same results and provides entertainment. Really good specialty teams (all season) would be a good start.

I'm taking a wait and see approach.
