Made my way down to Taste of Calgary this afternoon, can't walk by a group of flowers without taking a few pictures first though.

Hmmm ginger beef. Didn't take as many photos there, as I got distracted by the food.

i guess sometimes you just get lucky?!?!
i was using my 70-200mm 2.8 with a 2x extender - so i was shooting at f5.6
the other thing that helped was that the sun was behind me. i had friends taking the exact same pics on the kelowna side of the lake and they had issues becuz they were shooting into the sun
|
Yeah, sun positioning is part of that time of day thing I mentioned.

Taste of Calgary is back!? I thought it wasn't until September. My god. I'm a failure.

Nice shots, though I find your watermark is a tad distracting.

So should we (me) post some questions here if we (me) need any helpful hints and tips, or start a new "Photography Hints and Tips" thread?

I'd probably just post them here as it might get buried deep in the forums.
Much like the DSLR Pr0N thread did.

So I'm thinking about picking up a polarizing filter this weekend, is it bad that I don't have any filters at this point whatsoever? Should I have a basic UV filter just for protection?
I was looking at the Hoya 55 mm Circular Polarizer, and a Hoya 55mm UV HMC Filter as well.

As I've said before. It's much easier to replace a $70 filter than a $1,000 lens.
I really like the thin (3mm) Hoya Pro1 D filters.
I only have one Circular Polarizer for my walk around Nikkor 18-200mm lens.
It makes shooting is harsh light much easier.

Depends on what your lens costs IMHO.
Also, be aware that you might have to take the UV off when you put other lenses on. I didn't notice the vigntetting in my viewfinder the first time I stacked filters.
And if you want a filter system that will give you tons of room to grow, look at the Cokin P system. It's bulky though, compared to round filters.

Any Canon users have the EF 50mm f1.8 II?
Looks like a pretty decent little lens for the price (~$129).

I have the F/1.4, which is an amazing lens, especially for portraits and low-light situations. From what I've read about the F/1.8 it takes great photos as well, but the main complaint against it is the build quality (which is what keeps the price down).
