because he was drafted in 2021, his max full-season cap-hit would be $925K + whatever signing bonus he gets (as he'd unlikely hit any other performance bonuses).
Players drafted in 2022 and beyond it bumps to $950K I believe.

Don't the Flames have like less than $2MM to fill 4 roster spots? Yeah, it's not THAT big of an issue if they bring in rookies. However, they will still need to get rid of someone.
Then, when Treliving gets a 2nd for a guy like Toffoli or Backlund (way less than the prices we have seen at this deadline) - fans and media will be so AMAZED because the wizard made a move with his back against the wall.

This scenario has occurred to me also. While that will be a more rocky start to a rebuild, it is still a rebuild. So I welcome the alternate timeline.
Feel bad for Huberdeau, Weegar, Kadri, etc. who thought they were signing with a contender.

Trading for Huberdeau and Weegar and then signing them to long term deals that basically ensures that the team will be a cap team for the foreseeable future isn't trying to win? Adding in Kadri for the term and $$ isn't trying to win? You don't have to like the results, but saying that a team that is spending to the cap in a small market every year isn't trying to win is laughable.
This board is so toxic!
Teams have bad years.
The funniest thing about this place is the people saying to tank for player X every year. It is just as hard to win the draft lottery as it is to win the Cup. I would way rather be a team that is always in the playoffs or playoff hunt, especially since I don't think the team survives in Calgary on a full scale tear down.

Yep.
When's the last time the flames dressed 4+ rookies in 1 year.... yep you guessed it.
Sad days.

feel bad for Huberdeau and Kadri? I don't. They themselves haven't been good, to put it mildly.
Weegar, sure.

One of the biggest mistakes made this year was giving Montreal a first to take Monahan so they could sign Kadri. No one else wanted Kadri for what, two months? He’s not fitting in right now, can’t make a pass, can’t use his wingers, can’t make an effort to stay onside multiple times this year. Wasted a valuable first round pick.

The only news I want to hear today from the Flames is an announcement that Brad Treliving has been relieved of his duties and Darryl Sutter has elected to retire at the conclusion of the season.

They have missed the playoffs in 9 of 13 seasons. If the team gets a new arena, the team is not moving anywhere.
I laugh at the idea that the team can't survive a rebuild here. This team has survived for 34 years while only winning 5 playoff series - with 3 of those coming in one season.
This team can survive in Calgary through a couple planned down seasons.

And keeping monahn would have apparently given the Flames all sorts of cap options to work with moving forward and even today at the deadline. And a pick to move.
I miss Sean Monahan on the Flames. Something tells me we'd be having a very different conversation about Huberdeau with Monahan for the games Monny got to play while healthy .

It does feel like Treliving has been a ghost since the summer. Was it the same last season at this point? I just can't recall recent media availability with him or articles with him discussing the team's direction. Am I wrong? I'm not in the Calgary media environment, but I feel he has been more prominent in prior seasons.

I was one of the few who hated the Kadri signing. His last season was just too much of a mirage for me, and signing a 32-year-old to a 7 year, 49 million deal as a result just seemed nuts to me. Add giving up a future 1st to make it work ... but even I thought he'd be good for 2 or 3 years or so. Just a #### season all around.

Maybe Montreal will exchange the Flames' own 1st round pick in exchange for Hubs?

Yeah, if you look at this team they've already spent the following draft capital to make the team what it is today:
2023 3rd round poick
2023 5th round pick
2024 5th round pick
2024 7th round pick
2025 1st round pick
2025 4th round pick
This team is already running a deficit. It's brutal.
Bare minimum for today to be a success is to recoup a couple of those picks. Don't care if it's the 7th, 3rd, 5th, 4th or 1st - they need to gain back what they've foolishly spent to build this turd.

No he was out front of it a lot. He had a busy couple of weeks with the Toffoli acquisition.

we still have a 1st in 2025 though. The one we traded was extra.

No, we had two 2025 1st round picks because we lost Tkachuk. We're short that 2025 1st round pick. They spent it to build this team.
