My cousins daughter has autism and she basically has two choices: a ring of laminated pictures that she can flip through, or a computer that can "talk" for her that's ungodly expensive. My cousin lost her mind when she found out there are iPhone apps that replicate the computer behavior for around $100. Imagine what you could do with an iPad for a kid like that in a wheelchair? It wouldn't be overly hard to mount and they could have a full Stephen Hawking like set-up.

Oh for sure, they're being dragged kicking and screaming towards it, but that's what the market demands and slowly but surely they are going there.
And yeah a capacity based pricing model would be much better for us, but if they do that then they can't hide their capacity so they can charge whatever they want. But that's their mandate, to maximize their profits.

I think where you stand on the cost of the 3g plans depends on the value of your bits. If all you are using an iPad for is entertainment, I guess your bits are worth less to you, and so being charged $35 for 8589934592 of them seems expensive.
The way I see it though, if this thing gives me access to information and tools, in a really convenient form factor that I can stop and use anywhere, that helps shave even 5 minutes per business day, or makes me 5 minutes more productive in the time I have, then its easily paid for itself. 100 extra minutes of real productivty per month more than pays the $35. The entertainment value I’ll get on top of that is just gravy.
So it will be interesting to see if I can get the iPad to deliver on 5 minutes per day. I know when I set a similar goal for my iPod Touch, I was able to achieve it - OmniFocus became a huge boon to the way I work and deal with clients on a daily basis.

So I jail broke my iPhone, put mywi on it and it works great. It is quite a bit faster than I thought it would be. But I am sure it is probably dependent on your phones 3G connection

In the same vein, I also recommend my3g ... makes apps think you're on wifi when you're on 3g, so you can download things larger than 20 mb and view videos in full quality instead of borked 3g optimized quality.

App store is available to Canadians now. However, there are a bunch of apps missing. Notably, iBooks, Keynote, Pages and Numbers. I understand the iBooks as I'm sure there are many more hoops to jump through for the pricing and content of the store. Not sure why the other three aren't available though.

I don't see the iPad section... Is it different than the US store? In my US account, they have a toggle at the top to switch between iPhone and iPad. In my Canadian account, it looks the same as it's always been... no iPad toggle.

App store works for me, it's different from the US app store though, don't know why they couldn't have made it the same but whatever, finally I don't have log into my US account, find the app I think is cool, go to my computer, download it, switch back to my Canadian account on my iPad and then sync it!

Oh... so they haven't enabled the iPad Store. They've just unlocked it so that you can actually download the iPad apps now, if you can somehow find them on your own.

On the iPad you couldn't even open the App Store application while logged in with Canadian account. Now you can.
I haven't actually opened iTunes to check if it's there. Sounds like it's the same as before where you would have to track down the apps.

Well it's a lot easier to find them when I can now use the app store on my iPad and search by category or trending and download it.

Oh, now I get it. Yeesh, sorry, I misunderstood. People are talking about the App Store on the actual iPads themselves, not the iPad App Store in iTunes.
Sorry, carry on.
Edit: I'd read about this update this morning, and I've been checking iTunes at random intervals ever since, trying to see the iPad section. It didn't even dawn on me that the update was talking about the App Store on the actual iPad.

Just got an email from Apple telling me that the sim card for my iPad was shipped today. I guess it's something.

I saw the "your apple order has shipped" email in my inbox and I freaked out ... ya it was the sim card. That was slightly disappointing.

I just spent a while looking at some old forum threads on other sites to get an idea of when it may start shipping out. It looks like in the states many people didn't get shipping notices until 1 or 2 days before delivery as the packages were over-nighted to their homes. Wonder how they'll do that with Canada?
I'm off to a wedding Saturday morning and I'd love to have it for the drive.
