Well, you have a point. Trading Seguin away was a head scratcher. Most teams who retain good players to contend will find themselves in cap crunch sooner or later ex. Blackhawks, Rangers, Bruins, Blues, etc.
They say Chiarelli inherited a lot of those players when he came on board so we will wait and see...

Maybe so but most good teams (not all) will top out eventually if they want to contend. Trading away Hamilton sets the Bruins back years on the blue line...I guess their lost is you gain. GTG

It's easier than you realize to slip into cap hell. Treliving has to be very careful that the Flames don't put themselves in that situation in 3-4 years time - might require some tough decisions. Fortunately I think the Flames have a good institutional memory on this and Treliving was used to managing in a tough budget scenario in Arizona.

Wasn't Hamilton targeted when the Flames first attempted to trade Iginla to Boston? (Sorry if this has already been mentioned in the thread.)

Hey now. Khabi did a brilliant job mentoring Dubnyk. Unfortunately he had to leave Edmonton to play like it.

When they had the 13th, 14th and 15th picks with Barzal and Connor still on the board, I felt that the Lucic and Hamilton trades wouldn't be all that bad since those two were well within their picks.
I started laughing when DeBrusk and Senyshyn were picked 14th and 15th.

To be fair, considering their draft history, we shouldn't be laughing. They have a great scouting department.

Go read the draft thread at HFBruins. They're really thrilled to get Zboril, Connor and Barzal. But then they get to die all over again. And again. And again. It becomes tragic at one point but goes right back to being hilarious.

Surely you could have picked up DeBrusk or Senyshyn at 37th overall. Barzal falling out of the top 10 and right to 13/14/15 would have been robbery for the Bruins.

Perhaps. Perhaps not. Not the best asset managnment, sure, but there must have been some reason why they took him there.

The beginning of that thread appears to be talking a lot about drafting someone to partner with Hamilton as the top pairing in the future.
Poor Bruins.

Who knows, but Feaster would have been an idiot not to target him.

The only doubt I have about this trade, and it's a small one, is that our current team was successful because of all the in-house prospects that played a huge role last season, and the last time the Flames tried to trade for a star defenceman it turned out abysmal. I just really don't want a repeat of the Boumeester years

That, and the new hockey season can't come soon enough!
Is Hartley going to call him Hammy? Or Dougie?

Nothing to worry about. Flames have the cap space to match if he is offer sheeted. Worst case is they have to pay him a higher cap hit but it's still in their hands. If they choose, they can collect edmontons draft picks and let them deal with cap hell as chiral links accustom too lol.
